It depends on what's in your area, or the area where most of your guests will be. Popular choices include Target & Babies 'R' Us. I have friends who've had good experiences with both, though some (like me) found the selection at Babies 'R' Us to be really limited.

If you have a Buy Buy Baby in your area, I highly recommend them. They have an enormous (almost overwhelming) selection, both online & in-store, plus they take unexpired Bed Bath & Beyond coupons. I found the staff very helpful, and the registry process was very easy and informative.

Another place I highly recommend registering is online at Amazon.com. If you have a lot of younger people (or at least people familiar with buying online), this is a great option. Their selection is huge (and not just specifically baby stuff), their prices & shipping low, the customer service excellent, and it doesn't matter if there is a store near you or not. I loved having a registry here; I could see who had bought what, and often the items came directly to me. Many of the new features they've added (being able to compare prices with your smartphone, adding things from other websites to your wishlists) are really great for putting together a registry.

[They also have a service called Amazon Mom - it's a limited Amazon Prime membership which gives you free shipping on items purchased in the baby department. The more you buy, the longer your membership lasts, so if you plan to buy your diapers & such in bulk, this is the place to do it!]

A couple of notes about registries: do some research beforehand about what you might need (I recommend the book 'Baby Bargains'; very helpful advice & product reviews!), and then visit the store at least twice. Go once to get a feel for what is out there and what sorts of things you like. Then think it over, do some research, and go back once you have a better idea of what you want/need. If you have a friend with young children, take them along for advice! Also, do not register for a lot of clothes - chances are, people will just buy those anyway (particularly if you're having a girl...). Register for big-ticket items (helpful for families & grandparents...) and stuff that you will really need; if you register for lots of clothes, you will not get ANYTHING else, and your child will likely outgrow them before they can wear them all. Also: gift cards! They will come in VERY handy later.

Finally - try not to let yourself get overwhelmed. You really don't NEED all of the junk that's out there. And remember, you can always add or buy things later. Best of luck!

You DON'T! Anyone attending a baby shower already knows what to buy.

YOU must buy the expensive items; bassinet, car seat, infant seat, diaper changing table, crib, dresser and rocking chair.

If I were planning on going to a baby shower and I received a note to go to a certain store to buy things..........I would refuse to go because the notes assumes I am stupid and don't know anything.
