How to get into the steering column on 1984 Ford F-150?

My neighbor handed me the keys to his '84 pickup and said I can pretty much have it if I fix it. He told me that when the battery actually worked the ignition switch had to be replaced. I want to get inside the steering column to pull it out and replace it. But the only assistance I've had is this manual for fixing "1980-1996 Ford Trucks & Broncos." It doesn't give very good illustrations or instructions for getting the ignition switch out. If you could give me a website or detailed instructions? I'd like to have this truck running in the next few weeks. Thanks!

It is very easy to "lower" the steering column and get access to the switch which is at the bottom of the shaft, you will see it when you lower the column. First you need to remove the cover, there are two screw holes in the bottom of the cover, they are hard to see and should be a #2 phillips. You will need to remove the kick panels just above the the brake pedal and there may be some steel panel to remove also I just can't remember for sure. Now you will find the two bolts that hold the column up, remove them and rest the column on your lap. Look in the bottom where all the wires are and you will see the rod from the key going into it. remove the screws and go get one. That would be half the work of removing the whole column and not even near the cost.

it would be a lot easier to change the whole steering column then fooling around with the switch. just get the whole works from a junk yard and change it. or you could pick up a haynes book at auto zone, it shows you how to change the switch.
