Can I cash a thousand dollar check from my son?

I I do not have a thousand dollars in my account.

Update:

Common sense might try reading the question, I said "Cash", not deposit. I fell and I owe the ambulance crew that took me to ER and the hospital bill, and money to buy the prescriptions that were written, plus the 400 dollars in blood work done by my follow up doctor. Not oweing anyone is the nicest gift of all and I appreciate the check. And not everyone has a credit card to pop the money into.

If you want to CASH it at your own institution, you'd need that amount in YOUR account, yes.

It probably takes 3-5 business days for a check to clear if you were to deposit it into your bank account. So if you wanted to deposit that check but then get the cash for it, you'd need to withdraw $1,000 of your own money from your own account until that check clears, thus would credit your account for that $1,000.

I would suggest CASHING the check at the bank the check is drawn from if you actually want the cash but don't have that in your own bank account. There is no wait or "clearing" time required when cashing a check from the place it's drawn from.

If the issuing bank have a local branch, then simply go their and try to cash the check.

If they refuse, simply open an account with the check and your funds should be available next day.

If the issuing bank is far away or out of state, then you must deposit the check into your account and wait for it to clear.

Most banks would make at least $100 available immediately.

No you can't. You don't have enough to give him $1000 out of your account, and the bank will not just hand over $1000 because you have a little money in the bank. They need to have your $1000 to guarantee his check. It would be better to take the check to the bank that the check is written from and see if they can cash it out of the writers account.

If you want to cash the check, you can do so at the bank it is drawn on, with proper ID.

If you want to cash it at your bank, it depends entirely on what their policy is about cashing checks for more than you have in your account. You may be required to deposit the check and only withdraw a certain percent of it.
