Can a teenager get published?
I am fifteen. I have been writing stories since I was 7, and I wrote my first full-length, 96-page novel when I was 11. I've been writing novels ever since, particularly about history. I promised myself that I would get published when I was 16, so for the past two years I have been doing a lot of research on getting published and looking for literary agents.
Lately, however, I've been having thoughts that maybe I'm not ready. I KNOW that my writing is good- I've had a lot of people say so. Granted, they were just, like, my mom and my friends, but I do feel that my books have merit.
I'm writing a book about the War of 1812 right now and I'm very close to being done. What do you think I should do? I want to get published by a fairly large company. I want people to read my books because I have a message I want kids to know: you don't have to be dark and dreary to be a teenager. You have to take action.
Thoughts appreicated. Well wishers only. If you think I'm dumb, don't say so. I've had enough people already tell me that.
I suppose when I say 'well wishers' I just mean constructive critism, not just negativity. I know that it's a hard world out there and I will probably not get famous. I just want to get published. Also, I live in Canada.

If you've researched as much as you claim to have done, you should know the answer to this question already. You get published in exactly the same way that an adult does. Nobody in the publishing business cares how old you are. They care whether you've written something that will make a profit for them. It is astonishingly rare for them to think that about a book written by someone who's 15, but don't let me stop you from trying. You don't have to tell them your age when you submit your manuscript - only if they offer to publish, because it's not legal for you to sign the contract yourself. One of your parents will have to sign it for you. If an agent or publisher can tell, from your writing alone, that you're not an adult who's been writing for a couple of decades, they won't offer to publish it.
If you feel the need to say things like "well wishers only," then you are not ready. All writers need a thick skin and the ability to deal with being told "no" a lot. If you don't have those, either develop them or give up your ambition of being published and concentrate on something easier, like being selected for the offensive line for the Dallas Cowboys.
Of course your mum and your friends think your writing is wonderful. Your mother is genetically programmed to love you unconditionally. Your friends are (presumably) your friends because they like you. That means they won't say anything they think will hurt your feelings, at least not without a good reason.
Personally, I loathe novels that were written to put a message across, or to push a particular agenda, rather than being written to tell a good story. If I can tell that an author has a drum to bang, I tend to avoid that author in future, even if I agree with his views. I read fiction to be entertained, not to be lectured.
EDIT: If you want constructive criticism, join a critique group if you haven't done so already. Such people will not be predisposed to be nice to you, and so will give you a more honest assessment than your family and friends of how close you are to being publishable.

Yes, I think so. I have also been writing books like you for the past 2 years. You go in search of a good publisher after writing many short stories. Don't go for big novels at once. First write some easy novels for children below 13. Once you think your short stories are appreciated you can go for big stories. Hope it helps you.

You can definitely get published. :) I've heard of a lot of kids and teenagers alike getting published, and I know for sure you can do it too. J. K. Rowling (the author of the renowned "Harry Potter" series if you didn't know) submitted her first book to 12 different publishing houses and each time it got rejected. One of them finally accepted her book, and now it has become one of the most famous books ever written. My point is not to give up. If people knock you down, don't let it get to you. Keep trying until someone accepts your work. I'm sure someone will read it and be astounded. I've always wanted to be an author and I'm still working on getting it all together. Don't give up!! :D

Yes, they can. Actually, the author of a book called Wicked Lovely wrote this book when she was 13. Her next book, which I LOVE is called Blood and Chocolate, was written when she was 17. They were both published after she completed writing them..

It is possible and as been known to happen, but is unfortunately unlikely. If your book is actually very well written and has an original interesting plot, it may well get picked up but I wouldn't get your hopes up. JK Rowling had several companies turn down Harry Potter and almost never got an agent interested, and look at just how amazing her books are.

Of course! To be honest, you're just like me. I'm 17 right now & I've been practicing this writing books idea since 6th grade. Once you send your book out to be published, there'll be some drafts about it, a professional editor who will do some editing & a proof reader. So no worries. Believe in yourself in your writing. Pray. Practice.
I'm still working on my 1st book, but I'll get it publish soon. I know everything will be fine. Trust me.

You say well wishers only. Then why did you even ask? You don't want to hear that just because a few extraordinarily talented teens published doesn't mean you will?

No, you probably are not ready, bu that does not mean you should not try.
My questions is, if you have been "doing a lot of research," why don't you have more information?
Of course you can get published at 16, if you have sale-able work.
Grad a copy of Writer's Digest. Lots of great material for new writers.
Good luck.

While its possible to get published under 18, its unlikely. There is a lot to consider. The laws are dependent on your area. If you're in the US, you have to deal with formal copyrights, and contracts involving parents/legal guardians.
