why is the sport soccer called soccer?
in most parts of the world the sport is called football,but here in USA the word football is used for a sport that only uses their foot to kick off ,punt and field goals,when in soccer the game is actually using your foot the whole game

I think it's to do with socks. I know people who call it footy sometimes, so why not soccer? Oh, and I'm in the uk.

The word 'soccer' comes from the word 'Association' in Association Football (the proper name of the sport). It originated in England but is only called soccer in America and some other nations.

In this country, soccer was originally called "association football" but the name was shortened. By the time soccer became organized in the states, our own brand of rugby-derived football was already much more popular which continues to be true to this day.

Football or "soccer" is derived from association football as(soc)iation football,this was done so not to confuse with american football.

nfl has been around since 1920 in us. soccer became popular in probably 1940's. so they gave it the name soccer because the name football was already being used. (y porque estan pendejitos muchos hueros de u.s.)

Becaues the term "football" was already taken, and we really didn't care what we called it because nobody talks about it.
