How do I stop my puppy from peeing in his crate?

My puppy had peed in his cage a few times this week Although I must admit we should start taking him out more I'm starting to worry that he may make a habit of peeing in he crate. He is only 11 weeks old, so i don't know if I'm worrying for no reason. Do I have a problem? How do I fix it thanks!

You don't have a problem yet, but eventually you might if you don't start taking him out more often. He is still a small puppy and only has a tiny bladder. When my puppies were little I set a timer and took them out ever 20 minutes and repeatedly said "go potty" until they did at which time I would praise them and give them a treat. Every dog is different in how long it will take them to catch on but if you put in the time it will pay off. Also, try keeping him out of his crate when you are home and just keeping an eye on him. Discipline him if he starts to pee in the house, but also when he starts to swat immediately take him outside and repeat "go potty" (or what ever phrase you choose to use). My dogs now will go to the bathroom on command if are about to get in the car or leave him home alone. Good luck to you. Just be patient. It might take time, but it will be worth it!

First off, did you buy him from a pet store where their puppies are crated in small cages all day? A puppies natural instinct is NOT to soil their den, but if they have been forced to do it since day one, then they will also soil their crate.

Second, it's possible the crate is too big. When a crate is too big, puppy will eliminate on one side of the crate and sleep on the other. Make sure the crate is only big enough for him to stand and turn around in.

Third, a puppy has a very small bladder. He can not hold for 2 hours or even 6 hours like a regular adult dog. Take him outside 10-15 min after he eats or drinks so he can eliminate. When he does, praise him lavishly with verbal praise and treats.

EDIT: You can even attach bells to his crate so he can tell you when he needs to go. He will figure out how to use them, when he rings them:

    1. Put him on a leash and take him outside. No attention, no praise.

    2. Wait for him to eliminate.

    3. Bring him back inside and immediately crate him. Give no attention or praise.

Make sure you don't give him attention and pet him, then he will ring the bells all night long wanting you to take him out and play!
