Just what is it about today's UK Secondary Schools that makes so many young people dislike them so much.?

Curriculum ? Indvidual lessons ? Teaching methods ? Or what ? (I'm a retired teacher)

Honestly, the majority of students don't mind school. It's a way to socialize with lots of people and form new friendships. Sure, the 'lessons' aren't greatly appreciated because certain lessons can be boring so on some parts, I would criticize the teaching methods. With a good teacher, a bad lesson can be easily turned into an interesting one that flies by if the teaching is great. If all the subjects in a day were fun and interesting, what is stopping students from liking school?

Another reason is the gossiping. We all know the drama that occurs in secondary schools and sometimes, that makes students prefer to skip school because of the grief and bullying they will encounter. I must say, schools aren't very friendly places to be. After all, kids can be cruel.

Most people would be surprised with the amount of kids that quite like school!

If you ask me, school is something that is natural for students to hate like it is natural for countries to go at war over almost anything for long periods of time. I'm not saying either is a good thing but that's just the way it is. However, I don't think the education system is effective in testing students' abilities and their potentials, not all teaching methods benefit students much (depending on the teacher) and the students don't find a lot of the curriculum interesting but even if all of that was perfect, I'm sure students would still find a way to hate school.

I think it's the freedom that kids have these days that is the problem. I think they'd be much happier with more defined parameters. I don't think it's anything to do with school content. My wife is a depute head at a secondary school in Glasgow so i'm not completely uninformed. It just seems that they are pulled in too many directions, structure is what's missing.

Aw, come on Alan. Remember when you were in school - didn't you have a phase of disliking or affecting to dislike school? How about the students you taught over the years?

Most students like school, some don't and some pretend or think they don't like it. Nothing has changed in that respect for hundreds of years.

Children are given too much freedom - in many cases they are brought up to believe that they have the "right" to behave however they want and that their desires are as important as (or more important than) other people's.

When they are told "no" these children simply cannot accept it.
