Cats and Christmas trees are bad and dangerous combinations. Take a look at DearTabbyTheAnswerCat.com. Under ‘cat care’ they have articles on “How to Save Your Christmas Tree From Your Cat(s),’ and ‘How to Save Your Cat(s) From Your Christmas Tree.”

Since Christmas is over remove it...That's one lesson learned I stopped having trees because of the same reason.... It wants something (like grass) to help it throw-up a hair-ball...probably...
If you don't want to remove the tree right now, make sure the cat stays out of the room..NO! NO! comes to mind if it does it again...It will sense the change in the tone of voice, no need to harm it, just pick it up and hold it, or take it to another room and play for 5 minutes...

Cats are instinctively drawn to live plants. However I saw this online:
Christmas Trees
Christmas trees are considered to be mildly toxic. The fir tree oils can irritating to the mouth and stomach, causing excessive drooling or vomiting. The tree needles are not easily digested either; possibly causing GI irritation, vomiting, gastrointestinal obstruction or puncture.

My cats do too
I think its just that for like 11 months out of the year they are so used to the same old thing same old furniture and then all of a sudden something new and unusual comes out and they are so interested in knowing what it is

Cats love eating certain green plants. You can grow patches of rye grass for them in trays and they'll snack on that from time to time.
Not sure why, might be for vitamins, might be to help them digest.

I guess they think they taste good.
