Why is my internet so slow all of a sudden?

So I just got back from visiting my parents for Christmas. I was gone for about a week and decided to leave my Macbook at home. Now that I'm back my internet is mind numbingly slow. What gives? How do i correct this situation?

    You got home at a time when everyone is home on holiday and online. The network is over loaded. Not much to do but wait and using it at a time when people are sleeping.

    Another possibility, you have unsecured wifi and your neighbors found your router and are using it too.
