Might this be tongue in cheek?

Is there analogy, metaphor, subtle reference in the saying,

Barking up the wrong tree

I've stood years wizened,

scarred by storms

and nails in boards

so children could climb,

choked by a rotting rope

holding an unused swing

as old as the dirt

I'm secured to, rooted

shaded you old dog

when the heat of day

might have done you in.

Yet still you lift your leg to me?

Update:

Road, I was born at 11:11 on 11/11/89 and while I think you meant to offend, I'll ignore that possibility, given that you don't know me.

Update 2:

While it's likely accurate to state I'm not a poet, I think I'm secure in knowing I am smarter than a box of rocks.

Roadtaken really should format a paragraph properly when giving advice like that.

a little sugar with my saccharine...

YOU ARE OFFICIALLY A POET KELS!! hehe it is noted this day of December 28th 2011

  • Forgot the critics my friend. Writing is a personal thing and it is your feelings and emotions you are expressing. I love your work because it is personal. I don't really care about perfect structure. Perfection is boring and over rated anyway. It's like a song played too perfectly. It is cold and impersonal. Give me a little sloppiness and emotion any day.

Definitely have personification covered. The metaphor is something or someone old and reliable and just taken for granted. On a lighter note, the dog is only trying to mark his territory... he must like you, the tree, that is! lol

Methinks this is not tongue in cheek ....but just cheeky. I like the thoughts here. I have not seen you before which is puzzling.

The old dog sees shade and a pissing post as one and the same ( perfect arrangement for him) . I have known a few like that in my time.

It' good it's nice and short and it says a lot .Unlike my most favorite haters who specialize in so many words that say almost nothing .They do try to makeup for their lack of meaning by talking a lot of crap in their answers .I talk a lot of crap but my poems say a lot ..I will let you in on a secret if they say how wonderful and how life changing your poem was and blow a lot of smoke up your a s s then your poem sucks .It's when they don't tell you much and they knock your poem that's when you know that your poem is good . I think you did a good job.You are a poet You just don't know it.

    Kels

I think I get this. However, in your case, if I bet the dog did it out of loyalty and true love. He may have gotten confused at the time, but I'll cut this cool guy some slack and just touch him to breathe.

    Nice.

  • You did just fine Kels. Don't let anyone get to you. I liked this Poem. Hope you & Dallas are doing well hugs.

Dog house, pee house, poetry house. We gotta love what we do, the scars we earn, the lessons learned for those we do it for when we do it all for love. In other words, is there a choice in love? Is there room for two in love when two have become one? And is there room for regrets?

Please keep writing and posting poems for Yowee reasons. I will too.
