In other words the customs of cutting a tree out of the forest and decorating it with silver and gold are useless.
You'll also notice in the Gospel of Matthew that word Vain apears again ...For Jesus said they praise me with their lips ..but their hearts are far from me...for they worship me in Vain...holding on to their customs and traditions........
I did not celebrate Christmas and I missed non of the gift giving and all the other nonsence that comes along with it...I am a Christian and I do not celebrate Christmas for it is a Pagan Holiday and God tells us not to worship him in that manner....there are 7 Holy and Feast Days that God told us to be careful and observe and do not add to them nor take away from them...and have we done that >>> NO !
Feast of Tabernacles
Feast of Trumpets
Day of Atonement
Days of Unleaved Bread
Pentecost
Passover
Last Great Day
The are the Days we should be observing but so many "Christians" are a rebelious people who love to celebrate customs and traditions of Men...............In other words they worship the Lord in Vain !

In the context, Jeremiah is giving the people God's message. Here is the rest of the verse:
"For the customs of the people [are] vain: for [one] cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe."
The message is based on this: heathen people were afraid, perhaps terrified, of the idols which they had made with their own hands! God is telling the people of Israel, basically, "Don't do this". Read the entire mini-sermon, or message from God, in verses 1 through 5; perhaps the rest of the chapter as well.
Strong's Concordance, as found on the Blue Letter Bible web site, gives these additional words for "custom":
1) statute, ordinance, limit, enactment, something prescribed
a) statute

These readers state that Jeremiah 10 proves that the Christmas tree is a pagan custom and is forbidden by God. Therefore, they argue, all those who decorate a Christmas tree in their home are sinning in God's sight. This is quite the serious charge.
This however can be debated & debated for a long time to come.
Gob Bless!

The Word of God is truly the joy and rejoicing of my soul, or inner-most being. How I thank my god for giving me a love for his Word at a very young age. I cannot even remember not loving the Word of God. Do you realize that it is Jesus speaking in Psalm 119? Yes, and it is Jesus speaking in all the other prophets. Very few people realize this and therefore miss all the glory. Most people think Psalm is the words of David. Not so, except that Jesus is called David, in some scriptures. Jesus is also called Joshua, and many other names in prophesy. See that the Jeremiah verse you quote proves what God showed me...that the flesh which the Word was made into was the spiritual truth of God, not a human baby. Jesus SPOKE and ATE the Word of God. This was his FLESH, or his spiritual FOOD. He is the one speaking in Jer. 15. It was Jesus saying I ate your words. (This is also the kind of 'eating' named in Genesis two). It was EATING words. Words of law, or words of Grace. two trees. I also EAT his words. It is my life. It is my joy. It leads me, it heals me, and now also, is my Councilor. When I need instructions, He gives it to me. I do not need man, for God is my help. Sure he may use people at times, but it still comes from the leadership of God. If God's people could learn that God's word is Jesus speaking, and that it is about Jesus, not other men, then they would find greater joy and come to truth. They try to put the things in Daniel onto men way down in history. Not so. It is all about Jesus and Adam. Those two sons of God are the answer to it all. One is salvation, (Jesus), the other is Satan, (Adam).

This means that those who choose to worship false idols do it to no avail, in futility, for nothing since nothing will come of it. Believers worship the True Living God not wood or stone idols.

Your Christmas tree is an illusion. Satan, even his children, transform into angels of light. They make right look wrong and wrong look right. It's all based on lies.
All praise be to Yahuwah in the name Yahushuwah!

Read in context - God is pointing out that the gods of the nations are just idols that someone carved and decorated. they have no life. they just stand there. they cannot move, they must be carried. therefore don't bother with them and do not fear them. for God is a living God, His name and power are great.
