Any Grateful Dead fans around here?

Well, I'm not, but I want to become one. I'm open to their type of music, but haven't really found anything I've truly enjoyed by them thus far. And, therefore, I've come to the almighty R&P looking for Grateful Dead recommendations!

They can be live, studio, whatever you like!

I know there are some of you Grateful Heads out there somewhere, so I'll be sad if I get 0 replies. :]

Thanks to anyone who contributes an album or a song to me. Links are unnecessary because I have the good ol' copy and paste function, but you can supply it if you feel the need to do a little extra work.

MQ: Favorite Grateful Dead cover? (Another band covering Grateful Dead)

MQ2: Favorite Grateful Dead album cover?

BQ: Recommend me any old psychedelic rock groups you'd like! LOL I'm in a psychedelic mood today, but never really explored the genre as much as I should have.

Update:

Oho, looks like I've got a lot to check out.

yeah, there are some here. i first saw the dead back in 1972, and ended up spending a good part of the 70's following them around. i still go to bobby and phil shows when they come around. at times they were one of the best live bands i ever saw, but they were also one of the worst as well.

    i'd suggest going here:

    http://www.archive.org/details/GratefulDead

you can download and stream live shows, look to stream ones that were recorded off the soundboard if possible. otherwise listen to the audience recordings. these shows are a good place to start:

    2/14/68 at carousel ballroom

    4/5/69 at avalon ballroom

    5/15/70 at winterland

    4/29/71 at fillmore east

    4/2/73 at boston garden

    4/27/77 at capitol theater

    5/8/77 at barton hall

    12/29/77 at winterland

    9/16/78 at giza eqypt

the quality of live shows begins to fall off after 82 or so, still good at times, but the drugs and alcohol show through a lot more.

I would start with a good live album, because they were always better live than in the studio. There are millions to choose from, but an easy place to start would be these two:

One From the Vault (recorded in 1975)

Two From the Vault (recorded 1969)

Their two mostly-acoustic folk rock albums of 1970 were their best, most consistent studio albums, so I'd get those next:

    American Beauty (1970)

    Workingman's Dead (1970)

Some other good regular-release albums include (in rough order of preference):

Grateful Dead (aka Skull and Roses) (1971, live)

    Reckoning (1981, live acoustic)

    Wake of the Flood (1973)

    Europe '72 (1972, live)

    Terrapin Station (1977)

    In the Dark (1987)

Favorite songs: Box of Rain, Wharf Rat, Morning Dew, Cosmic Charlie, Dark Star, Candyman, That's It for the Other One, Viola Lee Blues, Here Comes Sunshine, Friend of the Devil, I Need a Miracle, Althea, Stella Blue, etc...

    MQ:

Los Lobos - West LA Fadeaway

    Suzanne Vega - China Doll/Cassidy

Cowboy Junkies - To Lay Me Down

Lyle Lovett - Friend of the Devil

    MQ2: Aoxomoxoa

BQ: Old ones? Jefferson Airplane, Love, 13th Floor Elevators, Blue Cheer, It's a Beautiful Day, Santana, Moby Grape, Hot Tuna, The United States of America, Donovan, Pearls Before Swine, early Pink Floyd, Hawkwind, Big Brother & the Holding Co., Jimi Hendrix Experience, etc.

MQ: Tie between Jane's Addiction cover of "Ripple" and Indago Girls cover of "Uncle John's Band"

So many memories and so little space. Let's see...right now it's the time we were at the Hollywood Bowl in '74 and they were playing Black Throated Wind. I was standing there and all of a sudden someone passes me Bean dip and so I pass it. A moment later, another thing of dip... then another...then another...then another!?!?! To this day, everytime I hear that song, I think of bean dip. BTW, I'm listening to a show from 1991 and Black Throated Wind just finished!

I'm glad you are getting a few answers to your question, because I did not with mine, and now I know why I don't ask that many, think I'll just keep to answerning them. And if there is anyone that can get you hooked on the Dead, it will be sugaree.

I had to be high most times to listen to the Dead back in the day, but of course I had to do that with a lot of bands back then.
