Can you solve this microphone problem?

I'm trying to set up a microphone for google chat, and I'm having a bit of a problem. The microphone simply will not broadcast over the internet. The microphone works fine, and is set up correctly in the control panel. When using it in standard windows apps, everything works fine. The settings online don't work at all, verified by two different test websites, and the google voice setting page. I switched browsers, and retried all three sites with the same result. I've been through all the internet options that I can find, and can't see anything pertaining to microphones at all. So at this point, my only thought is a firewall problem. Any insight would be appreciated.

The operating system is Windows Vista, and the sound card is conexant smartaudio High Definition 221.

Update:

I tried both solutions to no avail. I am a little curious Laurence, I couldn't find the recording controls at all. Do you have another method of getting in there? I know exactly what you're talking about, and tried both methods you described, and didn't find it. I found the volume control, but not the recording controls.

On another note, I've tested, and ruled out the firewall (both windows, and the router).

    you have one input stream

    you have one output stream

you choose whats in a stream using a MIXER for each

the recording stream must have the microphone selected and NOT muted.

the Playback stream has inputs and a final Master Volume.

the Master Volume must NOT be muted and each of the volumes must be set

selecting stereo mix allows you to record windows sounds instead

to see your mixers, click on the two VOLUME buttons in AUDIO properties

toe see your audio properties, choose your sound card from your control panel.

if you cant manage that then

    start Sound Recorder

    click EDIT and choose Properties

this will launch the Audio Properties box with the

two Stream controls with the Volume buttons on them.

if you have multiple sound sources make sure the Dropdowns are set

to the ones that YOU USE. so a WEBCAM MIC is NOT the same

as the MIC socket of the pc. Click the dropdowns to see just how

many you have and STICK to the one you want to USE ie the

one that has a Microphone plugged into it! so make it the default

    on the dropdown.

if its set correctly what you say will be heard on your speakers and will

cause FEEDBACK if speakers are pointed at the mic.

Go to your browser shortcut, and right click > properties > compatibility > check the "run as administrator" box, then click ok.

    Then run the browser again.
