  • Can you help with this electrical problem on a 2001 Mercury Sable LS?

The car above is listed with a 3.0L DOHC Duratec engine. The car has been sitting in a garage for about 6 months, and the battery is clearly dead (about 8 months old and still under warranty). I figured it was simply that the battery had lost it's charge, so I tried to jump the car, and noticed that there was a peculiar electrical issue. When I first turned the ignition to on, there seemed to be a good charge, but after ~3-5 seconds, the lights on the dash dimmed, and when I tried to turn the ignition to start, it did nothing. I tried with both a jump starter, and with another vehicle and jumper cables with the same results. First thing I tried after that was to sand the electrical contacts, as there was a lot of corrosion. After getting both contacts, and the battery posts clean, I tried again with the same result. My first thought is to replace the battery cables, followed by the starter, but I don't want to just throw parts at the car until I have an idea of what may be wrong.

Note:I haven't yet gone through the fuses, and I'll update when I've confirmed/eliminated that as a problem.

  • Can you solve this microphone problem?

I'm trying to set up a microphone for google chat, and I'm having a bit of a problem. The microphone simply will not broadcast over the internet. The microphone works fine, and is set up correctly in the control panel. When using it in standard windows apps, everything works fine. The settings online don't work at all, verified by two different test websites, and the google voice setting page. I switched browsers, and retried all three sites with the same result. I've been through all the internet options that I can find, and can't see anything pertaining to microphones at all. So at this point, my only thought is a firewall problem. Any insight would be appreciated.

The operating system is Windows Vista, and the sound card is conexant smartaudio High Definition 221.

  • I have a bag of calcium chloride that seems to be leaking a liquid. Should I be concerned about this?

It's kept in a garage in a humid environment, and though it was against a wall, that area of the garage hasn't leaked again despite harder rains. I have the bag in the middle of the garage, and it continues to leak slowly. Any thoughts on this?

  • Why can't my Micro SD Card be formatted?

I bought a Micro SD Card to plug into my Blackberry, I put the card in and the device recognizes it, but can't format it. Next I plugged it into the laptop, but Windows won't read it. When I check the Device Manager, it recognizes the card is plugged in but says that the device can't start. Finally I tried it with a digital camera. Again the card is recognized, but the camera can't format it. What is going on here?

The card is a Transcend 2GB MicroSD with adapter.

  • Is there any chance that an electronic Blood Pressure Test was misread?

I had a BP test in an optometrist office recently, and they came up with a reading of 205/131. This seems extreme to me. Things I noticed about the test is that the cuff was not secured on my arm, it actually started to fall off as the cuff pressurized, and I was wearing a thick dress shirt and they didn't ask me to roll up my sleeve, they just took the reading through the shirt. I made an appointment with my doctor anyway, but I thought I'd get some other input here as well. Thanks,

    Dan
