Would you pick a name because you like it or because it has meaning?

I try to pick names to go on my list because they mean something to me but if a name has meaning but I don't really like the name it gets chopped.

Same here...I try to find names that I like that either have good Meanings or is meaningful to me, like a family name or a variation of a family name.

    As well as meanings

    Watch out for Initials

Mr Thomas William Ian Trent, throughout School was remembered as TWIT

And what about Robert Martian Pitt .. Yup that is right Armpit (R. M Pitt)

Fanny was once an innocent name

Now it can mean both Butt or Vagina ( in slang terms ) depending on which side of the Atlantic Ocean you come from.

Picking a Cute name can translate as "Bully me", Remember Children at school can be very very cruel. Unless the so called cute name is also COOL.. then it could go either way.

Some of the traditional meanings of names can be very disturbing

Also some names have different meanings in different languages

There are several name books that have names from all over the world

I pick a name with meaning to me. Not because the name means something.

I choose a name first based on how I feel about how it sounds. If it has a good meaning, then that's great. But it isn't necessary for the name to be meaningful for me to like it. I love the name Savannah, and it means 'open plain', which isn't very significant.

However, I'd also rule out a name too, if the meaning was bad enough. For example, I like the name Cameron, but I could never use it because it means "Bent Nose."

Pick it because you like it- because if you are naming a child or pet, it will be there FOREVER basically. So, make sure the way the name sounds is more important than the meaning:):)

I wouldn't pick a name based on the technical meaning of this name. I would pick a name that i think sounds good and that is unique.

I pick both: Meaning and if it sounds good. My daughter is named Nevaeh-Paris because I like both names, heaven spelled backwards because she was born on christmas, and Paris is my favorite place to be in the world. I always thought the name Paris sound terrific.
