Question about fixing my transmision?

i have a 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix GTP.

My transmission is slipping into neutral or something. I can put it in park at any time.

a little back story. I was noticing my tranny acting up. I checked the fluid when it was hot and had been running. It showed nothing on the dip stick. so all I had was a half a bottle of lucas transmission fix. I put that in there. and drove around for about 20 to 30 minutes to let it warm up and run through the transmission. A few hours later I drove off and made it about 30 seconds down the road until my car wouldnt move at all. If i changed gears you wouldnt hear it shift and all i can really shift into was park and neutral.

I went and put 2 bottles (2qts?) of fuild in...and checked it later when i could...and it might be a little above the max fill line. My car can run...I made it about 15 minutes away to a transmission place and they said it was out. It can run for about 1 - 4 minutes depending on if its hot or cold. and then i have to stop and let it sit for about 10 seconds and I can drive for another 1 -3 minutes until it stops shifting. The shifting is smooth and doesnt jerk at all while driving. until all of a sudden if i hit the gas it just revs the engine like its in neutral.

The mechanic that works on my tranny said it needs to be rebuilt, but he also offered to buy the car. So im not sure what to do.

maybe I have too much fluid? Should i empty half of it and replace half with lucas and maybe I can get another month or so out of the car? Granted it does have a transmission fluid leak also. But its my only mode of transportation and I just came back from college and I really need a car to find a job.

any advice would be fantastic. I really think there might be an easier fix than to get it rebuilt. Which I dont have the money for anyway. And I would hate to sell the car for scraps.

I would really appreciate a reply from Albert D. I have read some answers and he seems to know a lot about vehicles.

Thanks for any advice.

Its your transmission or may be your torque converter but since your going to have to pull the transmission anyway a rebuild is most likely what your looking at. Time for a new car most likely the car isn't worth the cost of a new transmission. Which I guessing is around $2000 to $3000 most FWD cars are very expensive to replace.

Unfortunately the Mechanic in a Bottle (Trans Fix Fluid) probably finished it off. When transmissions get low on oil the overheat which burns out the fiber plates first and the causes pump or valve body issue.

I have overhauled many, many transmissions over the 33 years in the trade because of overheat issues and your probably looking at 2 - $3000 depending on the technician and whether the torque converter needs replacing.

the transmission needs to be rebuild options are sell it won't get much for it, rebuild which will be in the 2500 dollar range from trans shop, or go and get one from junkyard which will be about half of the rebuild job depending on warranty and miles on the used trans only real problem with that will be if trans goes under the j/yard warranty j/yard will give you another trans the shop will recharge labor since you supplied the part

if your car is worth more then 1500 dollars then get the transmission rebuilt otherwise sell it to the dude who offered to buy it. it will cost you about 1500 to rebuild the transmission.

The make of oil will not make any difference, you have done some damage somewhere. Might be a pump but could be anything. You will need a pressure test down.

  • the 44t4 was replaced with the 4t60 and that one was replaced with the 4t65e. look into that info at the dealer for a possible warranty or a recall.
