Whatever happened to intermissions in movies?

Mom was watching Ghandi when the screen went black, saying INTERMISSION, and it started playing Indian music.

It reminded me of how in several older movies I've seen, like Fiddler on the Roof, there was an intermission as well.

What a great idea! With movies like Avatar and The Lord of the Rings that push 3 hours, why don't movies of the past 20 years or so have intermissions? Seems like it'd be good financially for the theatres, too - people buy popcorn, soda, candy, etc. twice!

Why'd they stop doing them? Do you think they should bring them back?

Update:

Eh, if they needed another screening, get rid of that advertising BS before movies. They could easily fit another showing or two in there without the half hour of ads beforehand.

i think it had to do with loading a new reel of the film onto the projector. A person would need a few minutes to thread the film through the projectors insides. As projectors got cheaper each screen could have 2 projectors which stopped the need to stop the movie.

Maybe because there are so many movies being released that they don't have time for intermission anymore? They need to get the people in and out as quick as possible so they can have another screening.

Also, I know that lots of Bollywood films (especially the long ones) still have intermissions.
