Hello, I'm Sarah :D I've been trying to learn guitar since December of '09... so far, going pretty well! If you ever have any tips, feel free to help me out. I also sing. A lot. I'm currently a freshman at Auburn University majoring in marine biology after flunking out of chemical engineering. Psht, chemical engineering.

  • What is appropriate for a straight ally to wear?

    I have heard varying opinions.

My Gay-Straight Alliance encourages the rainbows for everyone: LGBT, A, S, and everything in between. I like that, because it makes sexuality not a big thing. We are going for equality after all.

I have other LGBT friends who insist on something different if you're a straight ally. The pink triangle surrounded by the green circle (uuuugly...). The rainbow A in the black and white flag. Just something to distinguish yourself as an outside-the-group supporter. I see a little sense in this as well: When straight people from outside the support group see that there are straight allies, they're more apt to join the support themselves.

So what are your opinions? If not the rainbow, then what? I've thought about pinning black and white small ribbons behind the rainbow ribbon and sticking it on my bookbag. Perhaps a nice HRC pin.

  • Any help for my Central Limit Theorem problem?

    Example problem:

X is the lifetime of a television set. The average life of the TV is 789 days; the standard deviation is 110 days. Let xˉ be the sample mean of the lifespan of 202 TVs. The distribution of xˉ , due to the Central Limit Theorem, is approximately normal, but the distribution of X is unknown. Using the normal approximation, calculate...

    (a) P(xˉ≤779)= 0.0982

    (b) P(xˉ≥798)= 0.1224

    (c) P(780≤xˉ≤803)= 0.8423

So I have the answers (we were given these), but how do I get to them? We're allowed to use the statistics program R as well as graphing calculators to figure out the answers.

I have the same exact problem, but with different variables, in my homework.

Any pointers in the right direction would be IMMENSELY helpful.

  • Any vegetarian brown bag ideas?

So I'm going on an overnight field trip tomorrow... the professor said that breakfast and lunch will be provided, but with my luck, it'll be sausage scrambled eggs and ham sandwiches...

I emailed him to ask if there'll be vegetarian options, but I'm heading out to the store tonight. Any good ideas for things I can keep on a 5 hour bus ride, chuck in the fridge for the night, then eat in the field the next day? (I have an ice pack-equipped lunch box, so mildly spoilable things like hard cheeses are fine... just not milk or things like that...)

    So basically:

-nothing that will get soggy after 16+ hours (or if it will get soggy, I can put the wet bit in a container)

    -fine to eat cold

-not too sensitive to temperature weirdness

    -not terribly messy

Not a huge fan of the PB&J.

    I'm thinking...

Morning: box of juice + snacks

Snacks/fruit: small tin of nuts, tangerines, bananas, granola-ish bars

Lunch: ???????? + snacks + box of juice

  • Anyone know a good portable acoustic stand?

    I got this one yesterday...

    http://www.amazon.com/Fender-Mini-Acoustic-Guitar-...

And it fits in my case, but just barely, and I know it'll wear a hole if it stays in there too long. I'm returning it.

I saw some really awesome ones at the store, but they were $60 or so... no way!

So, any recommendations? I don't care if I have to break it down into several pieces first... I'd just like to have something so I don't have to lean my guitar on a chair and set the bottom on the dirty ground. (Or, worse, concrete! Ouch! Poor guitar...)

I use a Roadrunner Hybrid Polyfoam case, if that gives you any reference. The front pocket's about 12x8x2, and I can easily put the strings and such that I keep there in my under-neck compartment or the other pocket in the front. I'd prefer to go with something flat and wide than tall and skinny.

    Thanks!

  • Is your taste in music narrow and deep, or wide and shallow? (Or neither?)?

Chances are that you're either a lot into a little or a little into a lot.

Do you have about 10 bands you listen to on a regular basis, but you own half of their albums, or does your musical taste span far and wide with a regularly-played album for every genre, even psychobilly punk hardcore rap space rock... but only a couple of representative albums for each?

I'm narrow and deep. I can count the bands I listen to on a regular basis on one hand. But boy, do I listen to them! I'm craving more and more, and feel like my collections are nowhere near complete...

    http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c314/dawgsnkats/...

So how bout you? Do you wish you were different? Or do you enjoy the intimacy of only having a few favorite bands and listening to them exclusively?

  • Alternatives to Allegra-D?

So I'm in scuba diving, and one of my ears refuses to pop. My doctor said it was probably due to Eustachian tube swelling. He prescribed me Allegra-D.

Being over-the-counter, insurance doesn't cover it.

Being evil, Chattem, Inc. still charges $100/month for it.

From what I'm seeing, most of what I need is the decongestant part of it - the psuedoephedrine. I don't have problems with watering eyes, running nose, sneezing, or itchiness.

So... alternatives that contain psuedoephedrine or decongest just as well as it does? I'm Googling now, but some guidance would be excellent.

    Thanks.

  • 10-20 gallon aquarium ideas?

    Howdy all :)

So, I have a little 2.5 gallon tank (well... glorified bowl; it doesn't have a filter or air pump or heater), heavily planted, for my betta right now. He seems to be fairly happy, blowing bubble nests, though as soon as I can afford it, I'm fixing him up with a proper heater and filter.

I live in a dorm, and I've been wanting a pet for a long time. He definitely fills a hole here. It's just nice to zone out and watch him swim around :)

So I'm thinking of saving up over the summer and getting a 10 or even 20 gallon aquarium for next semester. (20 gallons is the limit). Probably just going to do freshwater.

    So, a few questions...

    1. How much is a good setup going to cost me? I much prefer the natural looking tanks to funky colored neon ones, so my decorations are going to be rocks, plants, wood, etc. with either sandy substrate or brown gravel.

    2. What kind of fish suitable for a small aquarium are the most fun to watch? I'm really tempted to do some schoolers, because I absolutely love watching those in professional aquariums.

    3. Any tips on long breaks? For 3-9 day breaks, I'd probably just set an auto feeder up, but for my month long Christmas break and two month long summer break, that wouldn't be an option. I drive to and from school, but I know the 4 1/2 hour drive with these little guys would be very stressful on them :(

    Thanks for the help.

  • Anyone else have troubles with ear pressure equalization?

My right ear won't equalize during scuba diving. I've had problems with it for years on airplanes and mountains, but those weren't as pressing situations as this...

I know I'm doing the Valsalva maneuver correctly, because my left ear will pop with no problem whatsoever. The right one doesn't pop, is painful on descent, slowly equalizes to the pressure in the water while I'm on the bottom, and then on ascent, it hurts, gives me vertigo, and makes this very loud, high pitched squealing sound as I get about 5 feet from the surface. (I'm guessing this is only my perception; no one else has commented on the odd noises coming from me :P)

I'm just getting started with diving, and if I can't hit the water for a month or two after getting it treated, I'll just finish my 15 foot training dives in the pool, get it treated, THEN get certified on the open water.

I'm seeing an ENT doctor about it sometime soon, but I'd like to know what might be wrong. Anyone with similar experiences? Thanks.

  • Would it break my VAIO warranty to clean the fan?

My laptop's been overheating, and the first piece of advice I'm seeing is to make sure the fan, vent, etc. is good and clear.

I know I'm not supposed to mess around with much in there, but would it be fine to open up where the fan is and clean that out?

    Thanks.

  • What are some good non-FPS multiplayers?

My boyfriend found out that I'm more on the up-and-up with gamer culture than he expected (his responses have been hilarious) and he's looking into games we could play together. He has an Xbox 360, and we both have PC's.

I suck hard at FPS's and other things requiring quick reactions, so I'd prefer something a little more relaxed. He's open to just about anything. RPGs are fun (just no MMO's that require a subscription please!) I don't really know of many non-FPS/racing/MMORPG multiplayers out there.

I don't mind connecting over the internet for PC games, of course, but no one-console, one-player things for the Xbox.

    Thanks!

  • Can you help me with this Statistics/R problem?

"What percent of the variation in the variable temperature is explained by the linear regression on the variable carbonDioxide?"

How do I begin to do this? I have the two variables plotted in a scatter plot (x=temperature, y=carbon dioxide), and I think I've calculated a line of best fit (y = .08951x - 24.9479) but what does this question even /mean/?

On the same question, I have this:

"The carbon dioxide value as of June 2011 is 393.71. Use the least squares prediction equation that you calculated to predict the temperature difference. The temperature difference is..."

Temperature difference from what? I get that you plug in 393.71 for Y and work backwards to get your X, but what do they mean "temperature difference"?

Thanks. I'm so confused right now.

  • Statistics correlation problem - can you help?

"Is the correlation an appropriate measure of the strength of the relationship between x1 and y1?"

We have three graphs: a linear, a curved, and one with clusters. I can calculate the correlation for each, but I don't really know what makes it a good or bad correlation. Please help.

    Thanks.

  • Looking at a small aquarium for my dorm. Any ideas?

Looking at doing a 3-5 gallon aquarium for my dorm. I'm getting lonely without pets :(

I know non-hardy fish don't take to such a small aquarium very well, because one thing goes wrong and the entire tank chemistry is thrown off-kilter... if I did fish, it would probably be a Betta and a snail or small Cory catfish.

I was thinking more... weird. Sea monkeys. Triops are intriguing; I remember having them as a small child and everyone's weirded out expressions when I showed them off... ah, memories.

But any more suggestions? Things that have done well in your smaller aquariums?

    Thanks.

  • What does gender mean?

I mean, gender's not what plumbing we were born with.

And I don't want to attribute it to stereotypical things. You shouldn't have to like sports to be a dude and you shouldn't have to like shopping to be a chick. Not all girls act the same, not all guys act the same. Heck, if we got down to it, I'd be more of a guy than anything. (I'm a chick, by the way.)

So what IS gender, then? Just societal perception? Something you innately know? If we lived in a genderless society, where the only difference was our plumbing, where chicks could be serious sports fans and guys could like shopping, would there still be FAAB people that identified as guys, MAAB people who identified as chicks? (FAAB and MAAB meaning female/male assigned at birth, for those of you who don't know.)

Just a thought that's been boiling in my head for a while. Just what IS this weird "gender" thing, if not a set of behaviors deemed acceptable by society? What does it mean to you?

  • Any easy recipes with extra-firm tofu?

I've got 4/5 of a package left of it that has to be eaten by Saturday. (I'm the only alternative eater in my household.) It's pre-cubed, so not really suitable for grilling and such.

Looking for semi-easy recipes with it. They don't have to be vegan.

We have an abundance of regular vegetables (onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, celery, etc.) in the house but no odd ones (shiitake or portobello mushrooms, spicy peppers, etc.) We also don't have many pre-made sauces lying about.

I'd like to do this without a trip to the store. Any good ideas? Thanks :)

  • Whatever happened to intermissions in movies?

Mom was watching Ghandi when the screen went black, saying INTERMISSION, and it started playing Indian music.

It reminded me of how in several older movies I've seen, like Fiddler on the Roof, there was an intermission as well.

What a great idea! With movies like Avatar and The Lord of the Rings that push 3 hours, why don't movies of the past 20 years or so have intermissions? Seems like it'd be good financially for the theatres, too - people buy popcorn, soda, candy, etc. twice!

Why'd they stop doing them? Do you think they should bring them back?

  • Any good LGBT-friendly charitable organizations?

I've been wary of the Salvation Army for a while after hearing their idea of charity was soup and a sermon, but now I know they're quite fundamentalist Christian, not lending aid to those of other religions and refusing help to gay couples with that idea that being gay isn't a sin, but having gay sex is.

    *rolls eyes*

Now I'm wary about a lot of charities... I don't mind religious charities, don't get me wrong; it's the ones who discriminate against who gets their money because they don't fit into their "moral code".

So any good, wide-spread LGBT-friendly organizations I could shuttle off my old clothes to? Any counterparts to the Salvation Army's Angel Tree for children of poor gays and lesbians? I don't live in a very large place at home or at school, so things that only exist in, say, New York, Chicago, and San Francisco aren't going to do me much good. Best I can do would be New Orleans (an hour from home) or Atlanta (two hours from school).

    Thanks!

  • Noob question: How much weight do I need for my weight belt?

Taking scuba as a class next semester. One of the requirements was weights and a weight belt.

I'm 5'7", I weigh anywhere from 145 to 160 lbs depending on what scale you ask, and a fair amount of that is body fat, haha.

At the MOST, how much weight do I need? (assume I'm wearing no more than the absolute bare minimum)

    Thanks!

  • Hit a bucket on the interstate. Now what?

I was driving along the interstate today when a bucket rolled out 10 feet in front of me. I slowed down without slamming the brakes, but I still hit it going about 60 MPH. The bucket didn't fall out of someone's back end; it rolled from the side of the road.

Now there's an amusingly bucket-shaped dent in my front bumper and a very angry driver.

I went to get an estimate. $670. Our deductible is $500. Wow, no.

Is there a way I can fix this, or at least improve it myself? Anyone I can call about this? I can live with the damage, but I'm not very happy about it.
