Tablet-- to buy or not what kind what can they do?

I am looking into buying a tablet of some type....Kindle Fire, Ipad etc... but not sure what I should get.

I want my son to be able to game (just a little Wizards 101 or Nick Jr type of site) I enjoy facebook especially Farmville and want to read books and possibly other fun apps

Any ideas? What do I need? I know we have to be where there is wireless for them to work for most apps but not much else!!

Is there a way to buy a wireless card/service for it that is limited (kinda like a gift card that runs out after so many hours....like if we used it at my work where there is no wireless?)

I plan to get a router at home after the first of the year and we go to places with wireless service...

any assistance is appreciated... I don't want to waste money on the wrong one b/c there is so many choices!!

Update:

so much info.. I appreciate all of you taking the time to respond (please ignore the TD those aggrevate me so much)

Hello Sarelda, you can play Flash-based Facebook games on any Android 2.2 or higher tablets (such as Kindle Fire or Nook Color or Nook Tablet which is Nook Color 2). A word of warning about Kindle Fire - known issues with Kindle Fire are that it runs hot to touch, video playback is jerky, touch screen is not responsive and it takes 2-3 touches to register, power button placement is very poor and is prone to accidental power off, all the hype of Silk browser is not true where the browsing is actually slower than on other Android tablets, Wi-Fi connection gives a lot of trouble to users on it, etc. Also, when Fire is activated it allows for 1-Click shopping through the account connected to the device, and such behavior cannot be turned off. Additionally the device asks for no confirmation password before validating the purchase, which means that if anyone gets hold of the device, he can purchase things at will. Also, on Fire when the Silk internet browser is pointed at the Android market, it reverts to the Amazon market with much more limited content. Amazon's own web site has hundreds of reviews (close to 1800 already) of Kindle Fire's new owners that gave it 1 or 2 star reviews because of choppy/laggy experience they got from this underpowered device.

Nook Tablet is much better without a doubt, it's a class above Kindle Fire. All pro reviewers on the web clearly voiced that Nook Tablet is a much better device with superior performance compared to Kindle Fire. It's got Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, Angry Brids, etc., the best battery life (30% better than Fire), the best non-glare laminated screen (not lamination on Fire), double the RAM and space for apps/photos/movies than on Fire, microSD slot and a microphone for Skype (not on Fire), physical volume controls on the side (not on Fire), very smooth video playback with excellent screen, and very fast apps load (unlike on Fire).

    One pro review to consider:

    ENGADGET

Both devices rock 1GHz dual-core processors, but the Nook has an edge here, with its 1GB of RAM to the Fire's 512MB -- and certainly the difference is noticeable, even when booting up something as simple as a game like Angry Birds. Things are even more pronounced during video playback. We took Shutter Island for a spin via Netflix streaming on both devices, and it was really like night and day. Motion is far less choppy on the Barnes & Noble device. The HD playback on the Nook also picked up subtle imagery like patterns on ties, which were largely lost on the Fire

First of all, you can't get a temporary wifi card. There has to actually be a connection to connect to it. Go for the iPad. You should be able to find the first generation (iPad 1) from a professional e-commerce site. They are discontinued from stores. But they are around $300 now. If you want to get the iPad 2 then by all means do it. But get the iPad, apple products have a much more stable OS. This gives them a safer experience without crashing. Plus, the Apple App Store has hundreds of thousands more apps then the Android Market. I'm trying to keep it simple for easy understanding. But it's more of a matter of opinion. In addition, the iPad has a much more elegant feel to it.

Plus apple release a new iOs 5.0.1 in which they put to use the cloud to syncronize any other items that are connected to a wireless network. If you have a wi-fi connection at home, then this is great. Rather then downloading several apps to only do one thing.

Actually no current tablets are really that good for gaming.

ALTHOUGH-You don't sound to knowledgeable in computers so I'd recommend (however mutch I hate to) the Ipad2 as it suports the most games currently and is the easiest to just pickup and use. Though some stuff is watered down to speed it up.

On The Other Hand-If im wrong and your very knowledgeable in what your doing then I'd segest any windows 7 tablet. Yes that right full windows 7 its not watered down what-so-ever so it can do ANYTHING your regular laptop/desktop can do and if your not happy with the touchscreen you can always plug-in a usb keybord and mouse to use. The only downside to this wonderfull machine is since its not watered down its slower then the Ipad.

Source(s): I got to mess around with both of them.
