What questions should I ask my neurosurgeon?

I have meningioma left temporal lobe and will be seeing a surgeon. I will probably see two surgeons from different hospitals just to get 2nd opinion. I need to know what to ask them so I can make and informed choice.

My wife is having the same surgery on the 11th of next month, luckily she is the best in our area for this type of operation (over 20 years experience) and rated one of the top in our city. This makes it easier to have done because we are comfortable in having her on our team.

We came up with the usual questions for this including diet, how soon we would be back to work, and what happens during surgery. She then told us that whenever and if ever we have questions don't be afraid to call her and she will answer any that we might have.

It is so important to feel comfortable in your team and we feel that 100% in our surgeon and her staff. Good luck,

Meningioma is inside the skull and outside the brain, so it is fairly accessible. Ask him if there are any options - radiation or wait and see. [I've had mine since 1999, I was lucky and it hasn't grown for years.]

Ask where the incision will be, how he will deal with your hair and how long it will take to heal up, how long you will be in the hospital, when you can go back to work.

My NS says that meningioma is the neurosurgeon's bread and butter, but you should look at the surgeon's bio online and check for experience. Must admit that when I had surgery for something else, I just picked a surgeon my friend recommended [she was on the board of his hospital] and didn't shop round. Good luck.
