Is the atheist's religious book the humanist manifeso?
Also in addition to that...why the protest that atheism isn't a religion?
Atheism is protected as a RELIGION under the First Amendment's Free Exercise Clause.
What is this clause? "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."
Maybe the atheists disagree, but as for living in the U.S. it's considered a religion.
***ooops....manifesTo
@jeff....hey bub...maybe you don't understand the Free Exercise Clause....atheism is protected under this clause.....this clause deals with religion (neither respecting one or prohibiiting one). hence, atheism is considered a RELIGION which is why it is protected.

There is no atheist religious book because atheism isn't a religion. Atheism is not a religion, ideology, or creed. Atheism is simply a response to a claim. The only thing I necessarily have in common with other atheists is a lack of belief in gods.
The first amendment does not define atheism as a religion. You quoted it yourself and it doesn't say that.
I'm an American too and I do not acquiesce to your notion that atheism is considered a religion in the U.S. I don't understand your insistence that it is.

No, honey. Atheists are simply people who lack a belief in gods- we have absolutely NOTHING else in common. It isn't a religion. We don't have a unified set of beliefs- just one non-belief.
Atheism is a religious POSITION, not a religion itself. The Establishment Clause prevents the establishment of an ACTUAL religion, which means that the opposite, secularism, is NOT a religion and the default.
I don't think you particularly understand the meaning of the word religion OR constitutionality of religious freedom. Atheism itself is not specifically protected- all religious POSITIONS are protected, and that includes having NO religion.

Atheism isn't humanism. Atheism is the lack of belief in gods, while secular humanism is a full-fledged philosophy of life.
The fact that the U.S. has laws which interpret atheism to have the same protections as various religions does NOT make it a religion.

No set of rituals or a dogma has been created that atheists follow "religiously," and that is the definition of a religion. There are no churches, rites, or dogmas to be protected under the First Amendment, so it is a moot point. Besides, how can you prohibit NOT doing something?

Atheism is not considered a religion, as the adage goes, "like bald is a hair color." An atheist is shares the same legal rights of a theist to practice a faith or to have none at all.

No.
In the first place, atheism is NOT a religion. It is the EXACT OPPOSITE.
Second - and I do wish people would learn this - there is no GROUP of atheists. There is no atheistic creed, no tenets of (un)belief, not catechism, no qualifying criteria. We have NO sacred texts. The only thing (the ONLY thing) that atheists all have in common is that they don't believe in any god.
Other than that central fact, athiests are as varied as humanity.

"why the protest that atheism isn't a religion?"
Because I care about the truth.
Source(s): To put my disbelief in an unproven supernatural hypothesis on par with the belief that God became his son (all the while still being himself) to sacrifice himself to himself to forgive us of a sin he originally condemned us to is absurd in the highest degree. - 9 years ago
"why the protest that atheism isn't a religion?"
Because it shows people are too lazy to look up the definition of the word religion.
Source(s): And no, our holy book is the Book of Pages
