What type of guard card do you need to work in Las Vegas, Nevada?

Does Nevada require a guard card to work? I see some places require a PILB Card and other want a sheriff's card. Whats the difference? I am aware that to work security in a casino you need a TAM card and a gaming license. From what I believe, The gaming license replaced the actual "sheriffs card" a few years back. Also what do you need to get you armed security license?

In order to work as a security guard in the state of Nevada, you must first obtain your registration card from the State of Nevada’s Private Investigators Licensing Board. *(See 1st Link Below)

No training is required before you apply for your registration card, however there is an exam that you must take and submit with your application. All of the training you will receive will be directly from the private security company or other establishment that you get hired to work for, once again, after you obtain your registration card.

You can obtain your registration card online, or via regular mail.

Your first step is to download the application from the Private Investigators Licensing Board. When you arrive on the website, click on Work Cards / Registered Employee Services at the top:

AFTER you obtain your Registration card, to obtain your additional training you can go to a site like the second one listed below.

The Sheriffs card you mentioned is a separate card issued to employees in the casino areas. It is NOT the same thing as a guard card, or firearms training card. Since 1947, to work on the premises where liquor and gaming are present a person must obtain a Sheriff's Card, (Work Card). It is mandatory in the State of Nevada regardless of what your position is in a gaming establishment. The purpose of the work card is to document, investigate and license all employees of the gaming and liquor industry. *(The 3rd link below refers to sheriffs cards)

To apply for a work card, applicants must:

    1. Be 21 years of age if employed in a gaming position or dispense alcoholic beverages.

    2. Show birth certificate if under the age of 25 years.

    3. Present proper documentation from Immigration and Naturalization Services if a non citizen.

    4. Pay the appropriate fees.

    5. Have signed referral slip from your prospective employer.

    6. Have a juvenile work permit if under the age of 18 years.

for Casino Security Officer certification you are required to be finger printed and submit to a lengthy background investigation by the Nevada Gaming Control Board every five years armed or unarmed. This costs approximately $ 75.00 to $ 100.00. You must also obtain T.A.M. card & C.P.R. / A.E.D. card.
