Do you remember the first time you played an NHL video game?

1.) Lets take things back, in the spirit of the alumni game, lets hear some players that you used to play with on a video game system like nintendo, sega, etc.

For me I remember playing NHL99 on N64 like it was my job as an 9 year old.

players that come to mind-Sakic-Forsberg-Roy I used to pick Colorado a lot, Messier-Leetch on rangers, Lindros-LeClair-Recchi on flyers, and the Devils were awesome back then. Seems that when I was a kid I would pick whichever team was owning the league at the time.

--- I'm curious to hear some of your early experiences with any NHL video game...

Name some of your favorite players that you remember playing with on your first NHL game.

BQ) Do you find yourself getting emotional over some of the history/players you are currently thinking off?

BQ2) Have you ever shed a tear over anything hockey related?

example) Roenick crying after the Blackhawks won the Stanley cup in 2010.

Happy New Year!

Update:

-and how could I forget playing on the PC back in '98 and '99 haha

-shadow, wow I haven't seen that in over 10 years!

Update 2:

-Great answers, childhood memories. I started skating at 5 too and love the game. Hockey is the best sport in the world. We should always remember the first time that we skated, and the first NHL game that we played. Passionate hockey fans ftw

I played NHL 2003 on my computer in Kindergarten (yeah that's right. I was a gamer at 5). Sabres vs Kings at the Staples Center. It was such a cool thing for me because is showed the starting lineups and a picture of the staples center in the backgroundd. Too bad the game froze up after like two games and never worked again.

Around the same time, I got NHL 2002 for my Game Boy advance (the one before there was light). I kept playing it on my DS until maybe two years ago, and I would always trade players to get as accurate of a Sabres roster as possible.

A month later I got the original Play Station and played Madden '03. I also remember I didn't get the new games. The next 3 hockey games I got were NHL 99, 00, and 01. I still play '99 on my old PS2 occasionally (have PS3 too) just so I can make the Sabres beat the Stars in the Finals like what should have happened if it wasn't for stupid Brett Hull's foot in the crease. Too bad there was no checking on that game. I also love playing '99 and then going to PS3 to play NHL 12 and looking at the difference in graphics. lol

BQ: I think about that my first hockey game was in 2000 at age 3 with the Sabres playing the Pittsburgh Penguins. I saLemieuxix and Jagr and don't remember. I always get upset thinking about the 2005-06 Sabres could have made it to the finals if their whole defense didn't get hurt in the playoffs. They probably would have beaten the canes and had a good chance to beat Edmonton.

BQ2: In the 2007 ECF between Buffalo and Ottawa, I cried when Alfredsson scored the game winner to eliminate the Sabres. After the big brawl in February, it hurt so bad to lose to the Senators because I thought they were all a bunch of dirty punks.

Happy New Year to you too!

First time I played NHL I didn't even know anything about the NHL & wasn't a fan. I was the NY Islanders because I liked New York city. I don't even know what my lines were or anything I just kept pressing A. I got destroyed because I didn't know the controls very good.

    BQ: Yes

BQ2: No, but I will when Sedins play their last game.

I played NHL 98 and 99 alot when I was a kid. I even played NHL 94 on my uncle's old Sega. I always used the Rangers, but I also used the Avs alot too because Patrick Roy was my childhood idol. I also remember beating the Isles 40-0 with the Rangers several times on NHL 2002. The pre-lockout NHL games were the best. I actually have more fun with those than the newer ones.

BQ: yes, when I think of Bourque lifting the Cup

BQ2: I almost did after I heard about the Yaroslavl plane crash

  • NHL 94.

But I loved NHL 06, I would dominate teams 50-2 with the Rangers, the Czech line, Jagr-Straka-Rucinsky.

    BQ:Somewhat.

BQ2:No,besides the tribute to Yaroslavl Lokomotiv.

blades of steel for nes at my grandmas house..then every single ea sports from 94-98, then finally played nhl 98 on computer, that game was beyond incredible at the time..i always picked the sabres no matter what, but in blades of steel i always picked toronto because jerserys were electric blue some reason i was attracted to it, the shootouts in the game were slapshots from the blue line but somehow was sometimes more fun then the regular game itself..i spent too much time as a kid playing video games.

    ------

best video game intro movie ever, in the eyes of a 10 year old at least..i just got some serious flashbacks watching this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBHWQX2VrKY

I don't remember the one I played. I remember it was the one that had that song Sweetness by Jimmy Eat World on it. That's all I remember. I think it was NHL 2003.

Anyway, I was always either Colorado, Pittsburgh, or Devils I think. Sometimes Phoenix. I remember hearing the announcers saying names like Sakic, Forsberg, and Roy too. On the Penguins I remember Lemieux and Hedberg.

BQ) Not really, I don't have any control over them.

BQ2) I was pretty upset over Lokomotiv, but I'm not sure if I cried over it.

Blades of Steel for the Nintendo. What stood out the most in the game was the fighting, if you lost, you lost a player for a short period of time. I don't think the game had specific players.

The next game I remember playing was NHL 94 for the Super Nintendo. Of course I played as the Jets at the time, Selanne was all the city talked about. Unfortunately I never owned a Super Nintendo, my neighbour did though.

The first NHL game I played religiously was NHL 97 for the PC. I believe it was the first 3-D hockey game made, I spent hours upon hours playing it, even updating the rosters manually (no roster updates at the time). What was remarkably cool about this game was that certain goalies had signature masks, so if you had Brodeur, you had his mask, not some generic New Jersey Devils mask (Roy, Joseph, Fuhr were some other goalies that had signature masks). With my Jets gone, my new favourite team was the Avalanche so I played as them as often as I could. Sakic and Forsberg were dominating, Roy in net, and maybe make some trades to acquire Selanne and Kariya from Anaheim? Hehe I had some good times on there.

BQ* Not really, just makes me feel old.

BQ2* Jets left, Bourque winning the Cup, Jets coming back.

NHL 05. Got it for 20 dollars at Rogers. It was a big reason I love watching and playing hockey today.
