Does a notice of juvenile violation get sent to both houses of divorced parents?

We just received a notice from the court that my stepson received a ticket for tobacco possession. He doesn't live with us and I'm wondering his mom's house received the notice as well or if the courts only send the notice to one house.

Update:

We're in California. The custody is 50/50 but the boy is choosing to live with his b/c she lets him smoke. Go figure...

Since custody is 50/50 both parents will receive the notice because the authorities would not know which parent might have custody at the time of the ticket.

If I were the parent that did not have current custody, I would make darn sure that I let the other one know just so the kid does not try to conceal it from them, not that mom will care, if she allows him to

    smoke.

where are you? laws differ in different states and even local areas

who is the lad supposed to live with [who has custody]?

and whose address did the boy give police? [maybe yours so his mother won't find out?]
