In my opinion it is separation of powers. The U. S. government has 3 equal branches: The legislative branch, which is Congress. The executive branch, which is headed by the President, and the Supreme Court. Having 3 equal branches has kept the U. S. a republic, and prevented it from becoming a dictatorship.

Other countries became dictatorships, because one person made the laws, decided which laws to carry out, and personally appointed the judges. Think of Gadhafi in Libya, Bashar Assad in Syria, and Hitler in Nazi Germany.
