looking for new virus protection?

i have avg free . it normally keeps me virus free, but some viruses have still got through. i have even got viruses from sites that avg says is safe (indicated by the green star next to them ). i would guess i have had to factory reset my computer about five times in the past year due to viruses. i have totally lost my confidence in avg. could you recommend a free program better then avg?

If you want free then I recommend Avast , superantispyware and Malwarebytes. coupled with Comodo firewall They are all free for personal use . It is safe to use two anti-spy products but never use more than one A/V as it can cause conflicts. You should run A/V and anti spy weekly.

The issue is that most free AV's do not have the runtime module that checks everything that comes in. AVG that you pay for will probably stop what you are seeing. That being said I have to recommend Norton NIS.

Avast is the best free AV, and Avira is second. Here is an unbiased comparative:

Avast is the only 3 star rated AV with a free version. You can get it here:

Ad Aware is currently listed as providing solid protection but no single anti-virus program or suite guarantees full protection all of the time - even paid for programs.

Perhaps you should think about getting (if you haven't already):

    A good customizable firewall.

Using a malicious link blocking DNS provider.

    Some Zero Day threat protection.

Using some form of system isolation software.

    Using rollback software.

Blocking adverts from loading on web pages (one of the biggest sources of viruses)

Make sure that whatever browsers you use are configured securely.

Stay on top of software updates.

Make sure that your AV program scans your emails.

Use some stand alone single use malware scanners from time to time.

I didn't mention any program suppliers but there are a lot of alternatives to choose from!

Have a browse through this lot to see what's available:

I don't know if it's free, but McAfee is awesome for my family. Might have to spend a little for better protection.
