Check out Austin Street in Forest Hills (the F train to 71st/Continental Ave.). One of the few strips in Queens that is compatible to the hipper areas of Brooklyn. Lots of shopping, bars and indoor/outdoor cafes and restaurants (many ethnic). Great to visit day or night with tons of Manhattan-like foot traffic during most days. You'll also be a hop skip away from Queens Blvd where you'll find a bunch of shopping malls (head west on foot or take the local R train one or two stops to Rego Park and Elmhurst).
Astoria is also great with lots of shopping, mainly on Steinway Street, and most of the neighborhood is full of Greek and other ethnic cuisines. Great nightlife with lots of dance clubs and bars.
