Natural Remedies for Back stiffness?

About 4 years ago I hurt my lumbar region pretty bad. Now it bothers me when the weather is cold and bad. I do not want to take pain medicine for it and it doesn't really hurt too bad but it is really stiff. What are some natural things I can do to help the stiffness. I know heat and stretching helps but I would like a good amount of info on each option if at all possible. Thanks.

Back stiffness is caused by muscles in the back tightening up. Then you add this time of year where the muscles tend to tighten up a bit to preserve body heat, and the problem gets worse, the stiffness becomes more. Heat would help expand the muscles so they can function easier. Stretching, while it gives some relief, is hard on the muscles, forcing them to work. The best thing is to free the muscles back up, so a little chill in the air won't cause them to become the problem they now are for you. Here's how to free the muscles up for your relief:

    Back:

    (do while sitting)

Place your left hand on your left leg next to your body. Place your right hand over your left shoulder, fingers over the back and the palm in the front and firmly pull down on them and hold. After 30 seconds slowly lower your body forward and to the outside of your left leg, keeping your left arm fairly straight as you do. When you reach your lap remain there for another 10 seconds, release the pressure but rest there for another 30 seconds. Then reverse your hand positions and do your right side.

For best results relax your body first by taking a deep breath and exhaling then remain this relaxed.
