You need a decent quality guitar. Think about measuring progress in terms of 6 months of steady practice, and then finding that 18 months down the road, you need a better instrument. I'd sooner that you save your cash, and buy a decent new guitar in a few months. These days, you can get a ton of lessons for free on youtube and other sites, you can get millions of songs chord charts free-of-charge, so I think you will find it worth spending a couple of hundred on a decent guitar.

Fender Stratacoustic - I play this more than my other eight guitars put together. It plays just fine acoustically, has a fast-handling neck juuuust the same as a Fender Strat, and it also plugs in, to give either an acoustic tone, or you can vary the sound through a wide range of jazzy, rock and bluesy tones. Great value, compact, and a good traveller.

I wouldn't recommend going to a superstore or a well known firm, for about £50 you won't tend to get a good acoustic guitar from places like that. I would look for some small music stores wherever you live, they usually have good (but old) guitars for pretty cheap. And the guitar being old doesn't really matter as long as it is pretty much in good shape.

Try looking through Wal-Mart or Target. They sometimes have guitars on sale. Otherwise I would go to guitar center and get the cheapest one there. Just about any acoustic guitar sounds good so you don't really have to worry about picking the right one.
