Has auto/spell check ruined spelling?

If you made a mistake with spelling you would learn how to spell the word if you weren't on a computer.

With auto spell check it's automatically fixed so you don't know you made a spelling mistake and right clicking on spelling mistakes you just click on the correct spelling without learning how to spell the word you spelt wrong.

so has auto/spell check ruined your spelling?

(before you correct me, i could have used spelt or spelled, both are correct)

Personally I think it's a matter of how you use spelling corrector.

If it were not there then half the emails and messages you receive would probably be spelt incorrectly and to some be incomprehensible.

Also the human brain learn quickly, even more so if an action is regularly repeated, so if someone were to put "humman" and the corrector changes it to "human", the brain will take this on board and learn from it, therefore editing (so to speak) the persons vocabulary very slightly every time an error is corrected .

This is however just my opinion after thinking about it for a very short time.

    I agree!

People I know can barely spell "excellent" anymore! They just rely on the computer. I think we should just look in the dictionary.

I don't know if it's ruined MY spelling, but I'm sure it has made an impact.

Hardly anyone seems to use it, I see tons of spelling mistakes here. I'd turn it off if I could, it bugs me that it wants to change British/Canadian spelling to American, and wants me to change words it doesn't recognize, plus the amount of punctuation I use.

I love spelling so it hasn't been a major problem for me. But sometimes spell check is clueless itself without realising :D

  • I keep it off since I have to write in 2 languages frequently, so for me it hasn't ruined spelling.

They should invent something where it corrects your grammar, like comma placement. It needs some work, bud.
