How do I make my dogs get along with cats?

I have two dogs and two rats and my boyfriend has two cats. We would love to train our animals to get along with each other so we could make things easier when we take the next step in our relationship. One of my dogs wouldn't care any less of cats or else, but the other one, Bob is obsessed with them. Twice now the dogs slept over my boyfriends place and they did pretty good initially, just sniffing around and listening to us when called. The cats never saw dogs so close before and hey were curious and a bit scared. We made a mistake by letting them free right away when we stepped into the apartment and Bob started to chase one of the cats and ended up being in a fight. Now he has an infection which was treated by a Vet and the cat seems traumatized.

We might screwed this up but im thinking that we can overcome bigger problems than this so there must be a solution an we are determined to find it. Any useful suggestions?

You can't. Dogs are the natural predators of cats. The only way you could have accomplished that is if they were raised together.

When we got (rescued) our dog he had been running loose for 4-5 months decimating the cat population of a local Indian Reservation.

Problem ; we had one cat at the time.

So we cleaned up the dog and placed it in the centre of the living room. I then took the cat and dropped it in front of the dog. The dog started for the cat and the cat let him have it !! The dog got a face full of teeth and claws and then all Hell broke loose for all of 30 seconds. That's when the dog realized he was hurting and stopped. Stupid dog had never taken a cat on head on. He had always chased them down in the open or ambushed them. Here was a cat that stood it's ground and gave him what he deserved.

We still have the original cat and have added another since. Dog sleeps with the cats and nurses them back to health when they have a mishap outdoors.

POINT - you don't have to do much of anything to get animals to get along. You certainly cannot make them cohabit peacefully. The animals are better served figuring all this out by themselves. Best I can suggest is to keep the fine china out of they way until they do.

If you'r dogs were ment to hunt vermin then you'r pretty much doomed if not then try to keep both your dogs on a leesh and let the cats walk around.

If they start fight tug on the leesh a bit away from them.
