Pain after so long after root canal treatment can be there because of root canal failure or in case of gum infection in relation to the tooth. If root canal failure has taken place, then re-root canal treatment can be done to save the tooth. If re-root canal is not successful, then surgical endodontic surgery, apicoectomy or extraction may also be required. For more info on pain after root canal, refer to..... http://www.identalhub.com/dental-pain-after-root-c...

Teeth have more than one root, so yes, it can happen. But maybe you could ask the dentist, maybe it's just a flare-up of the old infection which would need pills. Don't ignore it.
