What could cause this noise?
Alright. My older brother has recently in the last 3 months given me a very nice 2003 Saturn Ion as a gift. Of course I love it, but since I've had it, I've already had to have major to minor things fixed with it. One involving a very damaged fuel line. :-/ Here recently I've noticed that the car is making a very odd humming noise. I can tell plan as day that it's coming from the right passenger side of my car. It starts off very faint, but continuously gets louder as the car accelerates. I'm not very car "smart" so I mentioned the noise to my brother and he is unsure of what would cause it. I've been researching and I believe it could possibly be related to a wheel bearing going bad. My question is, would a bad wheel bearing cause the loud humming towards the front right side of my car? I know the tire on that particular side has some issues, but nothing to major. Slow leak to be exact. Is there anything else that would cause this sort of noise? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't like the idea of something else going wrong with my car, but cars pretty much equal money. :)
Thanks in advance.

well first of all, unless you have lots of money to spend like most of us don't, i would stay away from the dealers. they will over charge you on almost everything. here in SE wisconsin, the dealers are averaging around $110/hr were most independent shops are averaging $75-85. and trust me the difference will add up pretty quick.
ok down to the bizzniss...lol what you are describing could very well be a wheel bearing, but also could very well be a bad tire. not necessarily a leaking tire, but a "feathered" tire, a "slipped belt" (not very common for a slipped belt to make that kind of noise though, unless it wobbles at lower speeds. more specifically between 25 and 35 mph. also the the wheel bearing would usually sound almost like dry gears rubbing, if you've ever heard that before. if not you're still lost. lol oh yeah, another possible way, but not a guaranty, to tell if it's a wheel bearing is to listen when going around curves. if the noise seems to go away and come back from one way to the other, it's most likely a wheel bearing.
a feathered tire noise would usually start off the same. as you accelerate it will get louder, but usually stays there no matter if you are turning or not. the tone of if may change. for example it may get deeper or more high pitch on turns, but should still be there. another way to check tire is to carefully check the tire for uneven wear. almost wavy looking.
hope this helpsand doesn't confuse you, but i'd be more than glad to answer any questions through email if needed. you can reach me through the link in my profile.

Going from your description, it does sound like a wheel bearing. Does it stay high-pitched when you reach desired cruise speed? Or does it go away? Something similar happened to my truck and the noise got louder and higher pitched when I drove faster. Turned out to be a wheel bearing :) I would take it to a GM dealership to have them look at it and maybe they can pinpoint it. They cant charge you to look, and if they do find something, they will tell you. From there, at least you know what it is, and then you can decide if you want to pay them to fix it or not.

I also go with "feathered" tire. If your getting loud humming and its worse at 45 to 55 mph. Bad tire noise. If the tires are more than a year old and the shocks are spongy..its a definite.
