English is a Germanic language as are Dutch and the Scandinavian languages but English and German have moved far enough apart to be unintelligible to each other. English has a large number of words from French, Latin and Greek as well which came in with the church and the Normans. If English people want to speak German, they have to learn it, they don't understand it by listening to it or reading it.

You question should be "Do the English speak German?"

You are doing very well! I am impressed.

it is "Do the English speak German?"

Most language students, as far as secondary schooling, take Spanish because it is the second most common language used in america. More english people living in europe take russian

Most students past high school level are more likely to take german. German is a great language to take for world Business and its a major part of american Business and so more and more people are taking german every year

You'd say, "Do the English speak German?"

In this case, the English is plural, so a plural verb is required. And in this form of question, you use the "do" form of the verb.

    Good luck with your studies!
