Well, it depends on how fancy you want your cake.
If you just want frosting i would suggest these tools: 1. Decorating tips. 2. Pipping bags. 3. An angled spatula. 4. Cake leveler. 5. turning table (optional) 6. if you want color then gel color dye (dont put too much or it will taste weird)
If you want fondant, then you'll need these things: 1. Pipping bags. 2. an angled spatula. 3. fondant (you can get pre-made or make your own. 4. large decorating tip #789. 5. color gel dye for coloring fondant(optional) 6. cake leveler
and you can get all these things at joanns, hobby lobby, or if you have a cake supply shop.

I would start with a cake decorating kit. They are probably going to have what you need to get started. Wilton has some of the best cake decorating kits around. The Wilton 2109-859 50-Piece Tool and Caddy Decorating Set is a really nice starter kit. You can also get the student basics kit but you will probably grow out of it quickly. The best prices on cake decorating kits are from amazon.com Please check out my site for more help on selecting the proper cake decorating kit for yourself and if you have any other questions please contact me.

The Michael's Store in this area teaches the Wilton classes. They also sell all the equipment and supplies. If you have a Michael's or Hobby Lobby in your area, call and ask about taking classes. When you learn the techniques they teach, you will be able to make professional looking cakes.

I got the wilton starter kit at Micheals. It is very great, there are lots of tips, piping bags, things to make gum paste flowers, and things for fondant to! It is awesome, has everything you need except for food coloring, cake pans, and ingredients. Hope I could help!!!
