Where do people get the idea that Earth's gravity comes from its rotation?
A surprising number of people here on Yahoo!Answers seem to think that Earth's gravity comes from its rotation, as seen in several of the answers to this question: http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Anbms...
Where do people get this bizarre idea? Do they actually teach this in schools somewhere? Is it a religious thing?
Red Rose, given Rick's answer, I think you might be onto something there.

I asked this question 3 years ago, and had a slew of answers telling me that OF COURSE, no-one thinks that!
You are right, people do, and I have no idea where it comes from. As a teacher, I can assure you that I would never teach such a thing and nor do I know of teachers who would.
Honestly, I have no idea where it comes from. Could it be a half-remembered misunderstanding of centripetal force?

I think a lot of elementary schools in the U.S. might accidentally teach this.
People can teach elementary school in most U.S. states without having ever taken a general science class in college. Until children reach grade 6 or 7, the science portion of the education system in the U.S. is abysmal.
These are some common things that teachers tell students about science that they are wrong about:
-The sky is blue because it reflects light from the ocean.
-The Great Wall of China is visible from space
-There is no gravity in space
-Water drains in opposite directions depending on what side of the equator you are on
-Seasons are caused by the earth's distance to the sun changing
-The phases of the moon are caused by the shadow of the earth on the moon
And don't even get me started on their understanding of the Big Bang or evolution. Only 20% of science teachers support the theory of evolution. Compare that to 93% of the members of the National Academy of Sciences, 97% of the British Royal Society, and 99.9% of scientist with advanced degrees in biology.

I think something is being misinterpreted here..... if the Earth's rotation comes to an abrupt halt, it's not gravity they're saying causes the changes, but inertia..... if the equator land is moving at the thousand mph, then anyone on that land is , too.... but if the land stops, the person standing there will continue to move at a thousand mph...... got nothing to do with gravity..... it's just like the crash of a car.... the car stops, the people keep going..... only with the Earth, it's not just the people, but everything ON the Earth will continue that forward movement at a thousand mph...... air, water, buildings, the dog, the soil, rocks, cars, etc...... a real bad scene......
and I don't thing all those other answers meant a lack of gravity......

Centripetal force is a force that keeps objects moving in circular motion. So since the Earth rotates people think that it's that force that keeps our feet on the ground. It's just a misunderstanding some people have about how the world works.

A lot of schools that I have gone to (especially Middle Schools) seem to teach this idea that everything that happens is a direct result of the rotation of the Earth.

centripetal force
Motion along a curve or through a circle is always caused by a centripetal force. This is a force that pushes an object in an inward direction. The moon orbits the earth in a circular motion because a force of gravity pulls on the moon in an inward direction toward the center of its orbit.

im one of them, but somehow i've corrected my view.
thanks for many questions and answers here.
Source(s): i think maybe some of it can be trace back to encyclopedia i read when im still a small kid - 20 years ago. a picture of a person rotating a bucket full of water without spilling it. It is about a concept of creating a gravity on a spaceship.
