How do I build up my bicep and tricep muscles?

I'm a 15 year old girl, and I really wanna get stronger biceps and triceps. (But most importantly biceps since my triceps ain't too bad atm)

I'm naturally short, only 5,4" and I don't want to put on weight. I have very strong abdominal muscles and leg muscles but my arms are lacking. Any exercises that can help build up my arm muscles?

I'm a boxer, and I think a little more arm muscle would benefit me a lot when I fight, as most people at my club are adults and are therefore a lot stronger than me. I box at least once a week for 2 hours. And I lift weights every other day as well.

At the moment I lift two 2.3 dumbbell weights (one in each hand). I do 9 different exercises for the biceps, 20 weight lifts each. And 3 exercises for the triceps, 20 lifts each.

How can I improve this so I gain muscle on my arms quickly?

And is there any specific foods I should be eating? Or drinking?

I heard protein shakes are good for muscle growth, but my mum said they can be harmful, is that true? And if not, would it do me any harm because I'm a child?

And are there any vitimins or nuitrients that help with muscle growth? Also I'm a kind of vegetarian (the only meat I eat is chicken) so will that have an effect on the rate or muscle strength and growth?

Thanks for the help:)

Update:

I have gone through puberty..I think o.O

And thank you! That helps a lot! :)

Update 2:

Thank you 'matt able' :) I'm glad you didn't troll me, that was a lot of help! I'll definitely try those things! Thank you again! And I used to box more than that, but because of exams I can't go as much now:(

hi, that sounds like a very good work out in my opinion. depending on whether you have gone through puberty or not, muscle growth will be affected. also "lifts" as you call them are known as reps. i would suggest that you just increase the weight that your lifting as much as possible.

oh and protein shakes are not worth it. they can give you really bad spots and allot of the time they dont work

i was gonna troll you for asking that, but youre a girl and youre a boxer. so ill help.

i box too - i suggest training more than that if you wanna win a fight lol. training alone, will build up any muscles being used when boxing because well... you'd be using them!

in my opinion, i think someone like you shouldnt do weight exercises, but you should do bodyweight (calisthenic) exercises. for triceps do: bench/chair dips, and tricep pushups. then when youre strong enough, do regular dips. for biceps (and also back, as back is pretty important in boxing) do australian pull-ups/chin ups, then when youre strong enough, do regular pull ups/chin ups.

heres a link on australian pull ups/chin ups in case you dont know about them: http://www.alkavadlo.com/2010/01/all-about-austral...

and heres one on bench dips: http://www.alkavadlo.com/2011/03/all-about-triceps...

the guy who wrote those two articles + made the videos at the bottom of the pages, is a famous personal trainer / MMA trainer in NYC.

as for protein shakes, no. they arent bad for you. too much protein CAN be hard on your kidneys. and thats really just speculation, theres no science to prove it. but the same people who think its bad for you, also think that if you drink enough water, you'll be fine. water flushes out all of the excess protein that your body cant use. yes, multi-vitamins are always a good thing to take. its sort of like getting insurance for a car. you wanna try to take non-synthetic vitamins though, as the body can have a hard time digesting synthetic (man made) vitamins.

as for you being a vegetarian (sort of lol), yes that will affect your muscle development some. but not to the point where i'd say you need to stop being a vegetarian. i know of plenty bodybuilders, MMA fighters, boxers, and grapplers who are vegans and vegetarians, and they have plenty of muscle. drink lots of water, take multi vitamins (since youre missing out on a lot of vitamins by being a vegetarian), eat lots of chicken if you can stand it, and just... eat. you wont end up gaining weight from it, cause its hard to get that many calories from just greens and stuff. eating complex carbohydrates before a workout really helps, and drinking a protein shake after helps. i recommend 100% whey protein. avoid creatine, it can make you sick if you arent careful with it.

by the way, the guy above me is wrong. protein shakes do help, but the help is subtle. take .5 grams of protein for every pound you weigh, after a workout (in shake form), then just eat your chicken. also, lifts are not known as reps. lifts are lifts, and reps are reps. another word for a lift if an exercise. example: olympic lifts consist of: squats, deadlifts, benchpress, and press.

dont listen to him. no offense intended to that guy though.

Source(s): im a seasoned weight lifter/calisthenic enthusiast, submission grappler, boxer, and about to be a certified personal trainer full time. hope this helps:)
