Hi melody, first of all you need to know about a great current promotion announced in the news - until March, anyone who buys a one-year Nook subscription to the New York Times newspaper will receive either the Nook Simple Touch e-reader for $0 or the Nook Color e-reader for $99. The price of the Nook Tablet will be cut by $50 to $199 for those who buy it with a Nook subscription to People magazine.
Having that out of the way, although a lot of Amazon trolls like George Y and Rose D here post untruth about the "great" Kindle I'll try to help you to make sense out of it all. Kindle Fire has neither camera nor microphone thus no Skype calls possible on it. Also, reported issues with Kindle Fire are that it runs hot to touch, video playback is jerky, touch screen is not responsive and it takes 2-3 touches to register, power button placement is very poor and is prone to accidental power off, all the hype of Silk browser is not true where the browsing is actually slower than on other Android tablets, Wi-Fi connection gives a lot of trouble to users on it, etc. Amazon's own web site has hundreds of reviews (close to 2000 already) of Kindle Fire's new owners that gave it 1 or 2 star reviews and over 1,000 of 3-star reviews because of choppy/laggy experience they got from this underpowered device.
Instead, take a look at recently released Nook Tablet - it's been getting rave reviews and it is the best device in it's class - much better than Kindle Fire. It's got Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, Angry Brids, etc., the best battery life (30% better than Fire), the best non-glare laminated screen (vs. very reflective not-laminated Fire screen), double the RAM and space for apps/photos/movies, microSD slot, a microphone for Skype, and physical volume controls on the side (neither of those on Kindle Fire), very smooth video playback with excellent screen, and very fast apps load.
Check out a couple of pro reviews on the subject:
CNET:
We streamed Netflix side by side with the Kindle Fire, and head-to-head comparisons were very favorable to the Nook--it simply looked better.
PCWORLD:
The Nook Tablet's unique display has less reflectivity than the Kindle Fire's, and so is easier to read. The IPS display is laminated and bonded; so unlike on other tablets's displays--including the Kindle Fire's--there's no annoying, visible air gap between the glass screen and the LCD beneath. The Nook Tablet's home screen is highly customizable and provides quick access to apps and reading material.

Looks like Barnes & Noble is having a "Fire" sale! (couldn't resist) The fact that Nook Simple Touch sales have plunged and the Nook Tablet is being outsold by the Kindle Fire 4 to 1 or more, must hurt.
The Kindle Fire DOESN'T overheat, nor is it laggy, nor did it kill Cock Robin, no matter what bile the little man hiding behind the UnTruth curtain has been spewing.
I (and the hundreds of other "Amazon trolls" on here) have found the Kindle Fire to be excellent for web browsing, and enjoy the many movies and tv shows from the Amazon Video market, as well as the music from the Amazon Music market. As for the Nook Tablet.... oh, that's right, Barnes & Noble don't have a video or music market. My bad.
Email accounts work great, as do other links. There are apps for USAToday, ESPN, and many common websites.
BTW, the B&N offers require you to subscribe to People magazine @ $120 per year or the New York Times @ $240 per year. If you're not a subscriber to these publications, that's a pretty high price to pay for your B&N "discount", don't you think?
P.S. Dear little man UnTruth calls Rose D, myself, and all the hundreds of people who post positive things about their Kindles as "trolls"? Geez, I'd better start cutting or brushing my rainbow colored floor length hair! "Truth" be told, he keeps his q&a private so nobody can follow him, and he's 100% anti-Kindle and 200% Nook in all his rantings.
P.P.S. One more bit of reading from an independent source.

I bought the Nook Tablet, to browse the web, watch movies and tv shows using Hulu Plus and Netflix. I'm able to read my email either using the built in email client or the web browser. Since the NT has 16GB of space and allows for a micro SD memory card up to 32GB, you have plenty of space for music and movies.
I looked at the Kindle Fire, but it just didn't fit my personal needs. But I have several friends that own Kindle Fires, that are happy with them.

The Ipad is the best option as it provides all of the things you want but if its out of your price range than i would go for the Kindle Fire as it give you the ability to surf the web but only has enough storage for 10 movies, so remember that. The Nook wouldn't be any good for what you want as it is an e-reader to my knowledge which you wouldn't be able to surf the web or watch movies. I would choose the Ipad but if it is too much then the Kindle Fire is the best option.

Reading the e book instead of enjoying the movie is the ultimate way to see what the author intended. Reading uses your creativeness, hones your reading skills, and can improve your vocabulary.
