Is South State Chicago a safe area?

It's OK around 14th Street. The area deteriorates one to two miles south of there. The area you are considering is actually gentrifying.

No, that area is part of the South Loop and there are a lot of new condominiums and town houses. Very close to Downtown, Lake Shore drive and McCormick place Convention Center. Public Transportation is close by, taxi cabs are circling those streets quite often and black Lincoln Town Cars can be seen daily around the area. The travel time to O'Hare airport is about 35 minutes off peak, up to an hour and 30 minutes during the rush hour. To Midway, between 20 and 40 minutes.

It's pretty safe around there, that is considered the South Loop. State starts to get bad if you go south of 47th which is about four miles south.
