when changing out a heater core do you have to prime the new one?

Or will the pressure fill it up. I added more fluid to the radiator, but didn't think I needed too fill the new core.

It was suggested I add the make year and model. 1989 GMC Vandura 2500 Van

    Short answer: No. Just overfill the reservoir initially, then top it off after driving it for a while and then giving it a chance to cool down. Long answer: The water pump circulates the coolant throughout the cooling system. Thus, coolant is forced through the heater core, but with one limitation; ONLY when you have the heat set to hot. This temperature selector for your climate control opens and shuts a valve that allows or blocks flow of coolant through the heater core. Hot coolant flows through the heater core, a fan blows air through the heater core and you get hot air inside the passenger compartment.

    no but you should have said what type of car because many have bleeders to open to prevent vapor lock and overheating

    I would. You might end up with air pockets and no heat.
