Yorshire terrier shedding more than normal? ?
It recently started getting cold and snowing here in Illinois and our Yorkshire terrier puppy 3 yrs old has been shedding and loosing hair a lot more than normal. When we brush him we get hair balls that come off after about 3 min of brushing. We got about 8. We are very worried and don't know whats going on. Could it be in his diet or maybe he's lacking vitamins? We have been giving him our food since we got him which was maybe 4 months ago cause he doesn't eat his food. We do give him a lot of variety vegetabls rice some canned dog foods chicken etc. Or could it be that it's winter and he is adjusting to the climate.
Please tell us what it could be it would really help us and release a lot of stress.

A veterinary visit is probably a good idea - you have to be careful with homemade diets. Dogs need vitamins and minerals in certain proportions and homemade diets are often lacking or have something in excess. Dogs will not starve themselves, if you leave him with his bowl of food, he will eventually eat it - but he'll try to hold out because he likes your food better! He sounds like a pretty smart puppy. Dog foods are formulated to meet specific requirements, and are nutritionally balanced for dogs. There are plenty of brands and varieties available, try http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ for a good brand. We can't diagnose your Yorkie over the internet, he may have an underlying illness, only a veterinary examination can determine the cause of the shedding. Be sure to tell them about your homemade diet, chances are that your veterinarian can help you balance it if you so choose to feed him this way. Sometimes thyroid problems also lead to a dull coat and hair loss.

Yes, this breed does shed quite a bit. About the urine, it might just be normal that the dogs urine smells strong, but you could also call your vet and ask them about it, just to be sure.

needs a vet for medical problem
one problem is he needs dog food
put dog food down, pick up in 30 minutes, put back at next feeding
no human food or treats
treat like a dog not a toy
