You have several options:
1. Move the wireless router to a more strategic location. You can replace the antenna with a stronger one if it is detachable.
2. Buy a wifi repeater and place it midway from the router to your location.
3. Run an ethernet cable from the router downstairs and connect it directly to your laptop. Connect it to an Access Point placed upstairs if you still want to be wireless.
4. Buy a pair of Power over Ethernet adapters (PoE). It usually comes in pairs and are now available at most computer shops. Connect one PoE adapter to the router using a short ethernet cable, plug in one of the PoE adapters to your electrical power outlet, plug in the other adapter to any power outlet upstairs and connect it to your laptop using a short ethernet cable. It's like being wireless without the signal range limitation as you are wired through the electrical outlet. Your household electrical wiring system serves as your ethernet cable that carries the network signal. If you still want to be really wireless, connect the adapter to an Access Point.
The PoE adapter looks like this:

There's a video on that link in one of the sample images. There are other cheaper models. I can't really tell which one is the best and most durable. Search amazon or ebay:

If you are from the states, you may personally go to Fry's or a similar outlet and inquire.

Signal penetration can be an issue for wireless. If you are upstairs and the wifi is downstairs, sometimes the connection will not be as reliable. I would try to sneak a connection upstairs via wire and setup an access-point to repeat the signal to increase your coverage.
I do not know what brand you have, but this could be a start.

You can get another router and use it as a 'access point'. Access points enable you to increase your router range without moving or replacing the router itself. To use it as a access point just google the model number of your router and next to it write "how to set up access point".
