What are the CREW Skills in SWTOR? Why are they interrelated? (Star Wars The Old Republic)?

Hi... I have been playing SWTOR for 3 days now and I just can't understand how these Crew Skills work... I am just level 9 and reading them makes me sick! Can someone dumb down the concept to me?

    CREW Skills are

    Mission Skills

    Gathering Skills

    Crafting skills

    Mission and Gathering Skills allow you to acquire raw materials that you can use for creating new weapon / gears / items.

    Crafting Skills are skills you use in order to craft new items using the materials you gathered using your Mission / Gathering skills
