Question about tipping a hair stylist?
I've been going to the same hair stylist for more than 15 yrs and have always tipped him around 20%. Recently, however, he purchased the salon and is now the owner of it. He still cuts and my hair. I read somewhere several years ago that it is not customary to tip salon owners so I stopped tipping him and at Xmas gave him a $150 bottle of wine instead. Does anyone know whether salon owners (who still have a clientele) should be tipped or not?

Of course the owner of the salon should be tipped/why not?
Owning the business now does negate all of the years he has provided you with a service. You can give him a lower amt and still get him something for Xmas(maybe not a $150 dollars worth) Tipping a long time stylist should be considered a courtesy.

you need to tip the stylist 15-20%. i seem at it this way...while you're beneficiant with tipping, then you definately would be remembered and serviced as a result. to illustrate, your hairstylist gets you in on the final minute or use new products on your hair. techniques you, it is provided which you think of the stylist did a solid job and merits the top. I constantly tip transport drivers, valet, bellhops, hairstylists, and so on.

Tipping him would be nice if he does a great job. I feel that not tipping the stylist would indicate to him that he's done a bad job or there's some room for correction. 20% is a reasonable amount. You can bring it down to 10% if you feel that 20% if too high :) I usually tip my stylist 20% too!
