Euglenas (Singular: Euglena) are unicellular organisms that belong to the class Euglenoidea in the phylum Euglenozoa. Over 1,000 species of Euglena have been identified and described. Some species of Euglena have the characteristics of both a plant and an animal. Like plants, they can prepare food photosynthetically with the help of chloroplast present in them (autotrophic mode of nutrition). They also can consume food particles present in their habitat by engulfing, following heterotrophic mode of nutrition (like animals). Euglena undergoes locomotion (movement) with the help of a whip like structure called flagellum. It also has a photosensitive eyespot which is sensitive to light.

The eyespot of a Euglena is a primitive organelle that filters sunlight into the photo-sensitive structures present at the base of the flagellum. It allows only certain wavelengths of light to hit the structures. The photo-sensitive structures then detect the light that is transmitted through the eyespot and enable the Euglena to accordingly adjust its position to enhance photosynthesis. A Euglena can also consume food from its habitat. For this reason, many Euglenas are considered as mixotrophs i.e., they are autotrophs in sunlight and heterotrophs in the dark.

A Euglena can survive in both fresh and marine water. It adapts itself to its environment. In low moisture conditions, it forms a protective wall around itself and lies inactive as a spore until environmental conditions improve. Euglena lacks cell walls. Instead it possesses a pellicle made of protein.
