latitude and longitude?

why is the distance measured by degrees of latitude always stays the same, while the distanc 'measured by degrees of longitude varies?

    Latitude lines are all parallel to the equator and the radii of the circles formed by the Latitude lines around the earth reduces with each circle farther from the equator. The Longitude lines are all parallel to the Prime Meridian and radii of the circle formed by these meridians around the earth is identical.
