Do atheists believe in marriage?
Is it more of a religious thing or just for social acceptance?
Judging by your answers so far (or lack of them) it sounds like an out-dated concept.
By the way, I'm atheist, and by the amount of angry, bitter responses I've had to a perfectly legitimate question - half of you are as bad as the christians.

soem do some dont, depends on the person
it depends what they want, and what it means to them i suppose
i dont think its an outdated concept, but the limits we put on it are, we say 'marrige is this' so we get 'difficult' when it doesnt fit our wee lable
just ignore the trolls/agressive loons, they have issues, as worth your time as talking rationally to the town drunk

Yes, Atheists do believe in marriage because it's a universal tradition of expressing love and a binding contract with legal benefits. It didn't really start with religion or love though. Marriage’s primary purpose was to bind women to men, and thus guarantee that a man’s children were truly his biological heirs. Through marriage, a woman became a man’s property.

Marriage has nothing to do with religion, well at least real marriage doesn't. A marriage is recognized by a secular contract, not a religious ritual.
I do agree with marriage yes, so long as its out of the grounds of a church.

The concept of marriage predates religious hijacking of the institution.
Yes, I believe in marriage.

I don't think I need a piece of paper to tell me I'm committed to my partner.
I wonder why more people don't feel the way I do, especially since nowadays,
very few people take that commitment seriously anyway.

Marriege is a Civil Right, not a religious one, when me and my boyfriend get married theres not going to be anything religious there....I'm sure their will be praying though since his family is devout christian....but I have no problem with that but other then that no religious. A preachers not going to marry us, its not going to be in a church, its not going to be "Blessed" by a preacher. Just a Civil Union.
Source(s): Yes I believe in Marriege. - 9 years ago
Do you really think you have to believe in a god to get married and maintain a relationship. God didn't invent monogamy women did silly.
Source(s): Little baby Jesus has nothing to do with somebody keeping a promise. - Anonymous9 years ago
I'm atheist and I'm married.
EDIT: Servant of God, I don't know a single atheist swinger, but I have met Christian swingers. My husband and I practice monogamy and so do all the other atheists I know personally.
