Marriage used to be a contractual arrangement between families.

Then it became a civil matter, under Roman law for the first millennium.

In the middle ages, marriage broke down into promiscuity.

So the church declared it a sacrament & took over administration.

Civil marriage still exists, but so does common law marriage.

For Christians, marriage is also sacramental.

No one gets married in church. Many hold a marriage ceremont there, but the actual marriage takes place at the local county clerk's office.

You can get married in a religious ceremony where the minister/priest/pastor has the legal right to declare a marriage. If you are not religious you can have a legal ceremony where a person whom has been appointed by the state to preside over a marriage ceremony and have the authority to declare it as a legal and binding ceremony

Because they want God to bless their union. However, that is what they believe, it does NOT mean that all marriages have to do with religion. I got married in the church, my sister in law got married at city hall, my marriage is no more "real' than hers.

Since the first marriage / wedding was conducted and instituted by God Himself (Adam and Eve), how can marriage possibly have nothing to do with religion?? God and Christianity is the ONLY source of marriage. This "civil" stuff is a pathetic joke!! God Bless you.

    Source(s): I'm a Roman Catholic of 60 years now.

Aren't you forgetting about a "Civil Service" in which the married couple does it in front of a judge?

To be honest, almost any person is qualified to marry two people together, we could be having marriages in barns if religion hadn't been around as long as it has.

Marriage existed before churches were invented. My parents didn't get married in a church.

Marriage has plenty to do with God.

God felt that it was not good for man to be alone so he made woman for man is the genesis for marriage.

One man, one woman so that every man has a woman.

Getting marriage is special in that we want the marriage to be sanctified by God.

Go to city hall and the clerk will marry you in legal terms.

You can get married by anyone who has a marriage license...

Source(s): I'm guessing you've only been to religious weddings.

Another question is why do atheists bother to get married? What is the point for the atheist?
