Does cauterization work?

I mentioned it and someone said that it would only invite infection (because of burning) wich would make any wound that you are trying to cauterize worse. (This is supposing you have a nasty big wound with nothing with you except like a lighter or some matches.)

Is this true?

    You use a metal rod with a flat head. Kinda like branding, yes it works, but you have to defend against infection as with all third degree burns. It closes the wound tho. But IMO just go to the doctor and get stiches
