Will my bird be ok if I keep it away from my Dads smoke?

I have a little blue parakeet and I'm thinking about getting another. However my dad smokes a pipe in the house. I keep them in a relatively smoke free room (my room) and shut the door and vents but I can still smell it a bit and I'm concerned it might hurt them anyway. I'm doing what i can to keep them away from that all. If I just keep them in there while my dad smokes will they be ok?

Good question, my parents lost their lorikeet recently, it had lung problems and the vet said it was because the bird had aspirated some food into its lungs and got an infection (She had severe trouble breathing and the vet said her lungs sounded crackly). I reckon it was because my parents smoked next to her cage (she was outside on a verandah which was closed on 3 sides. Personally I reckon she had lung cancer. Small birds, small lungs and a higher inhallation rate.

Do your best to keep your bird away from the smoke. Smoking his pipe may be one of the few things that your dad enjoys in life, so maybe find a compromise? If possible, make a dedicated 'smoking room' that includes all the things that your dad likes while he smokes his pipe - comfy chair and TV or whatever, that isn't linked to your room. If that isn't possible, put some pressure on your dad to quit or smoke outside. It is also affecting your health and that of any siblings or other household members as well as that of your pet.

Having said all that, I am a smoker (cigarettes) and I never smoke near my bird.
